Title: X-Com: Enemy Unknown (Hold on to your butts)
Post by: Spook Island on September 09, 2012, 10:42:26 pm

It only took them 19 years, but the greatest game of all time just got a remake.

It's now officially on steam for preorder with bonus content and a team fortress 2 Guile haircut for soldiers.
Just picked it up myself.

I like spookisland more and more every day.

Seriously though, pretty hype.  I don't know, I hope they came a long way from shooting black blobs, I'll go check it out.  If its even half the game the original was, it should be fun.

EDIT:  Just watched the Last Stand trailer.  I didn't realize Firaxis was making it.  Its gonna be godlike.

When I first read about this game, I wasn't sure how I'd like it since I read that it was turn based. However, the vids on it and the gameplay look awesome. Definitely considering this game.

More so I'm talking about the ufo doing figure eights over my base in the middle of friggin' Russia only to b-line for the nearest ocean when I intercept them.

Thanks for the first grade science lesson though.  I dropped out just before, in kindergarten.  I unfortunately picked up cigarettes, cocaine, and loose women as my new time passers.  It was hard to reintegrate into society after that.  Especially with having missed first grade and never knowing the Earth was 70% water.  People just couldn't take me seriously when they found out I didn't know.

DON'T SALT THAT WOUND!!

Yeah I started a game where I roll with the punches, because I'll admit, when shit went wrong I'd reload.  I'd like to justify it as "within reason", but its totally cheating, haha.  So far so bad, 2nd terror mission didn't go so hot.

I played a lot of X-Com in my day, but I never became one of the dudes who can beat the final mission in 1 turn, with maxxed out mind control dudes.  Laser Rifles, Heavy Plasma, and human intelligence are where its at.

Just finished the first proper mission after the brief fully-scripted tutorial and base introduction. It seems pretty great so far.

Edit: oh, and apparently that's the whole demo. Well, that was short. Pretty promising, though -- really looking forward to launch!

Basically if you want an quick look at how the game is actually played, try the demo. There's really nothing else to see here.

It doesn't feel right to me. After playing the demo and watching a 2 hour gameplay video I'm pretty sure it's not for me. Too consolified, too many today's industry standards that have to be met. Good intentions when creating this but they can't escape the guidelines of their marketing guys.
Title: Re: X-Com: Enemy Unknown (Hold on to your butts)
Post by: SixThumbs on October 05, 2012, 08:43:08 pm
Six men squad does seem a bit limited compared to the ~16 that were in the original and the second demo battle that was a little less walkthroughy still seemed too scripted and I can't tell if that's how all the maps will play out. You can't really afford to have cannon fodder recruits when you start out only deploying four to a map (and they already have specific roles that the squad would need).
Title: Re: X-Com: Enemy Unknown (Hold on to your butts)
Post by: Molly on October 06, 2012, 09:41:34 am
Of course there is a tradeoff between marketing and gameplay but let's face the truth... This game will be the closest we will ever gonna get to the awesomeness of the originals.
And playing the 2nd demo mission made me feel like I am playing XCOM. And that's a good old feeling and made me preorder...

Can't wait for the release
Title: Re: X-Com: Enemy Unknown (Hold on to your butts)
Post by: Uumdi on October 06, 2012, 08:30:07 pm
Yeah definitely looking forward to it, but did they try to justify the small squads?  Designated roles and specs would be badass for 16 man squads, and make almost no sense for 4-6 people.  Its fuckin X-Com, not baldur's gate =/

I guess if it plays like a mix between x-com and baldurs gate though, I don't see why I'm complaining.  Peanut Butter and Chocolate I hope.

Post by: okiN on October 06, 2012, 09:53:44 pm
They did give some reason for it but I don't remember what it was.

I don't see what all the fuss is about, though. Smaller squads with specific roles for soldiers have worked awesomely in many other games in the same genre, like Jagged Alliance and Silent Storm.

And to those that worry that it's dumbed down, that mostly stems from the early gameplay shown and craptastic reviewers/players. Given the large amount of skills/weapons/gadgets at higher ranks, I see it being more complicated than the original or Apocalypse (which is still my favorite).

My only real worry is the claim that you will finish a campaign in 15-20 hours and only go on 30ish missions per succesful alien-stompin' adventure. Feels short.

And if anyone has missed them, the "other" UFO series (Aftermath, Aftershock and Afterlight) is ridiculously good. Especially Aftershock with the proper mod.

Pretty descent game, somewhat stays true to the original Xcom and has a kinda cool turnbased combat I acctually like( I normally hate all turnbased games). But for me atleast...doesnt have asmuch replayvalue as the original. Something just feels like I played it once, I did it all.....

I misclicked when attacking the alien base and dove my highest rank assault right down into 5 cryssalids instead of up on the desired, well-covered vantage point.

I thought "well at least I'll find out if they still rape squads like they did in the original"

Boy do they.  Starting over tonight.

Shot a rocketlauncher at those, while the others just finished them off with heavy plasmarifles. The base is a painfully long mission.

I am VERY impressed so far - the spirit of original X-Com is strong within this one! Only 3 hours in... Need to buy chocolate milk, brew fresh coffee and roll  lots of joints! I really hope to stay just as impressed after playing 20+ hours, as I am now.

I must say to my surprise the game is very good. I expected worse with all the consolification and industry standards but it worked out well. However I don't like how linear the weapon selection is. With getting rid of limited ammo they also lost an important balancing point as well as the good old logistics fun. Apart from the initial research/production cost there is just no reason to use laser at all once plasma is available. They did a better job with the armours though.

My Ironman game did not end well at all... Was figthing them green Mutons and "robo-disks" with raw recruits in the end :( Playing Classic difficulty, with normal saves now :) My top soldier has 40+ kills now! It is still very fun, and i am very pleased with the new X-Com! Good times!

Heavy and Assault are OP as fuck anyway, you should be happy. They're the only ones who get to shoot twice a turn. Run and gun flanking shotgun double-tap is top tier.

Well, an "in the zone" sniper killed like half of the aliens of a terror mission in a single turn, allowing me to save a lot people. Also the medpacks of a doctor skilled support are so helpful in long missions that I usually bring two of them. I think it's pretty balanced.

A sniper can shoot twice as well. But ya, assault definitely OP. Being able to use the Dash skill and shoot twice is crazy.

I had to assault a large UFO once with one assault, one heavy, two supports and two snipers due to casualties from previous missions. The result is that I'm camped out in a doorway trying to fend off about ten aliens, all chrysalids or floaters, with a squad made from "I can only use my pistol!" and "All I have is this shitty assault rifle." Didn't go too well.

My assault guy, on the other hand? If he doesn't kill a chrysalid with the crit from his second shot, he's guaranteed a finisher on the free shot when the enemy closes within three tiles. Heavy with shoot, overwatch, second reaction shot after successful first is also useful as fuck.

My Colonel Sniper with Skeleton Armor, SCOPE and Plasma Sniper is the deadliest guy I have: Double Tap, Squad Sight, Executioner... shooting across the whole map with 100% hit probability. Second favourite soldier: "Hardcore" Ho, Titan Armor Support with 20 hitpoints

Atm I am discovering the possibilities of my Psionic, Ghost armored Assault Major tho... aggro'ing the Beserker, switching invisibility on and then grappling away is funny as hell cuz the Beserker keeps chasing him down to the last known location in the next turn while everyone around him is on Overwatch shooting him into pieces in his own turn

Thought I would give this a little bit of a revive since I have recently bought the game, enjoying it massively I must say.

However, I have a question, I took some screenshots of Hector "Flash" Santiago, my heavy weapons guy back when he was the lone survivor for the tutorial mission. I had him tagged to survive the tutorial mission as soon as he walked off the plane due to being the only one with a moustache, he survived naturally. Three days later I look back at a screenshot of him to see a weird wolf head in the background, I didn't notice it while playing and I was wondering if anyone else saw something similar?

I also love how everyone gets off with a weird snarl, as if they hate being inside or something...

In other words.. idunnolol.jpg.

Maybe something the game developers put in to freak people out just for laughs when they first look over their screenshots?

So, is it just me that got bored of this game quickly because it's a really dumbed down version of the XCOM games? there are far better options out there, I hope this is moddable so the community can add everything to the game that's missing, because I don't see myself ever completing it, sadly.

I/I

Everything goes fine until Thin Men, and shortly after everything goes to hell.

Sectoids? A Joke.
Floaters? Laughable.
Chrysallids? Overwatch hilarity.
Mutons? Breakfast.

Thin men? Prepare to get your soldiers 1 shotted from across the map despite max cover or hunkered down.

Dafuq? How do I counter them? Despite only moving in max cover, despite suppression, despite everything I have done they continue to dodge 80% chance to hit attacks and 1 shot my teammates 1 by 1. I almost got to the alien ship at one point without even capturing one. I blow em to bits when I get the chance just to make sure they don't 1 shot my teammates.

Are you serious? Thin men have plasma pistols that do almost no damage and will get one shot by laser rifles or above. I only played through the game once on normal difficulty, but thin men were always one of the least dangerous enemies in my eyes.
The missions where I ended up with ridiculous amounts of deaths (3 or more squad members, often very valuable high ranking ones) were always due to sectoid commanders and ethereal mind control shenanigans, although that was mostly my fault for stubbornly going after arc thrower captures. Capturing and interrogating an ethereal is sooooo worth it. The first time I ran into a sectopod also wasn't pretty, I had no idea what the charging up for 1 round mortar attack was and had a bunch of soldiers clustered behind cover in the same area, but they were mostly new squaddie recruits so that was allright.

Thin men on normal are jokes.
Thin men on impossible will almost guarantee a 1 hit kill if your soldier is not in full cover or hunkered down and they can see him/her. (No armor yet)
If your soldier is in good cover, then its roughly 50/50 that he will kill your soldier.

Also, on Impossible, their poison makes rookies panic. A lot.
