Title: Comparing current to possible new NA server location (Ping test)
Post by: Meow on August 08, 2012, 11:09:22 pm
So this is totally not official nor did I hear about any concrete plans about actually moving the servers to Texas but some stats can't hurt.
This will give all of us an overview on how a location change would impact the community.

Please do only post the results in this thread, discussion will only make it harder to follow.

Only people who actually play on NA please...also please only do this once and when your connection is not in use by something else.

For everyone new to doing a ping:

1. Press Start/windows key
2. Enter cmd in the search bar (win7/vista) for WinXP press run and enter cmd then press run.
3. "DOS-box" will popup.
3. Enter: ping 74.91.113.155 and press enter
4. Wait till it finishes after 4 pings.
5. Post "Average = xxxms" from the last line as current.
6. Enter: ping 64.31.0.187 and press enter
7. Wait till it finishes after 4 pings.
8. Post "Average = xxxms" from the last line as New.

Post should look like this:

Current: xxx ms

Texas: xxx ms

Feel free to add what latency you actually get in game on the current servers cause the ping will probably be way lower.
Also if one of the 4 checks it does before you get the average comes back as a timeout, add that.
Feel free to add your rough location if you don't mind.

No discussion in here please.
Thanks.

What is New and Current?

Meow's post had two different IP's for you to ping.

First one is current server location.
Second one is Texas server possible location.

You report the "average" from each of the 2 tests.

I know Oklahoma has fiber optic internet if you want to check for servers there since it's right above Texas and wouldn't hurt Canadians as much.
Denver would be the perfect compliment to Chicago's North Mid-East geographical location.
Finally, Kansas is dead center geographically in the middle of the country, but I'm not sure what the internet situation is there.

just think, one side of the country brought you Seinfeld, Bruce Springsteen,  Frank Sinatra, The Sopranos, FDR (and thus victory in WW2 for America and Europe), and the U.S. Constitution.

The other side brought you the KKK, jim crow laws, the death of treyvon martin, demanding mexicans show their papers or get deported, rick santorum, burning korans, and 8 years of george w bush as president

which side really deserves better ping?

My ping used to regularly be 70, then it went to 83 being normal for months, now it's hitting 120-130ms from California.  The server is really starting to slow down, we at least need to ask to be put on a new box, or have them review the load of the current one.

Sorry to necro this topic, but did this server move ever happen? i.e. are the NA servers still in Chicago(?) or did they move to Tejas?

The reason I ask is that I have the opportunity to switch to an ISP that achieves ~15ms lower ping to the first IP address, but there is no ping improvement for the second IP.

Thanks

It should be placed in very central USA, maybe slightly north for our Canadian friends so we get an equal distribution of ping or whatever. Moving it to Texas is fine though. In wfas I get like 12 ping on a Dallas server.  :)

One's ping is a result of geographic distance and the pipelines and infrastructure that are used...hence hubs like Chicago and Dallas are good places.

But I wonder if Kansas City wouldn't be a good central location.

My suspicion has been that Texas server would even out pings for more players, in that it wouldn't be as large a disparity between people with low ping and high ping. Instead, more people with low ping would be raised and those with higher lowered to a point that they're closer to each other, instead of there being such a large gap as there is now. So I plugged all the results from this thread into a spreadsheet, but I'm not exactly sure where to go from here to try and figure out what I'm after. Anyone with a mathematically oriented brain wanna help out? Either by telling me what to look for and what equations I might use, or I can link you to the googledoc spreadsheet.

In the meantime, here are the results from one method I thought might help elucidate what a move to Texas would entail, filtering out certain ranges for each location.

pings <20
current: 11
texas: 7

pings >20 <40
current: 38
texas: 12

pings >40 <60
current: 20
texas: 59

pings >60 <80
current: 29
texas: 22

pings >80
current: 18
texas: 19

You can kinda see what I meant, with most of the change being significantly more people included in the 40-60 ping range, which is probably considered an acceptable level. It feels fairer in any case, more people having more similar pings. Outliers are outliers in any scenario and will still exist, but for the majority it seems a move to Texas would help even things out by bring pings closer together.

Updated the three added pingers into original post.

The 200% increase in players with a ping between 40-60 is hard to ignore.

I wish I got 30 ping, I wish I got 50 ping, hell I'd even take 75 ping.

Instead I get stuck with 90+ because somehow Chicago is the "fairest" place in America to host a server.

From Los Angeles to Chicago is around 2000 miles or 3219 km.
From Los Angeles to Atlanta is around 2,177 miles or 3503 km.

Essentially its an east coast server for me, if it was based in Texas I'd be very happy to donate but as it stands I have no desire to give out my money so east coasters can ping crutch.

Quoting myself, balance latency because its been over powered for east coasters long enough.

I'd be all for a move farther west if it was also a little farther north.

Like Colorado, Kansas, or Nebraska.

I like Kansas City, its the best place that doesn't screw canadians over.

Hmmm that's weird. It should be lower atleast a little bit.
Will try on my computer soon, I am on a laptop on wifi right now.

Yeah, when connecting from Cali, the ping variation is so great. I constantly move between Nocal and Socal and I've had ping from 75-140 depending on the location and ISP. It's awful. I won't really complain at 75 ping but am envious of those below it. I can only feel pity for those with over 100 ping because I've been there. It just makes for very quick, unfun sessions with little to no enthusiasm (of course there are those special few exceptions).

Cradoc, you probably pinged the same location.

Well I didn't but here's a screen from a retest

On my computer I had various results and had to run it multiple times to get the avg of the avg huehue

Current: 75ms

Texas: 73ms

I know a few people with ping around ~69. So jealous of them.

Moving the NA servers to Texas would be like moving the EU servers to Greece. It only rewards the shittiest part (with the shittiest people) of the continent.

that niga is mad
