Maybe adding fire arrows would make game more fun (for archers atleast)
It would need a torch in inventory, and would do more dammage, maybe a bit less accuracy.
-
Torch idea ok. More damage definately no. When you use a firearrow you cant pull the arrow all the way back. If you shoot it like that it'll just go off. Fire arrows there for should do less damage, less range and have a possibility of setting fire on ladders, catapults and buildable siege towers and whatever construction sites spawn.
-
Very possible due to the fact chadz has been adding Operational Siege Engines. But a better idea is a new set of arrows. For example, you may only have 5-10 fire arrows per match, and do a bit more damage?
-
This would make night battles look pretty, and I want to see a Miley charge out of the darkness in full plate with three or so flaming arrows stuck out of her swinging at people.

im glad your discusing it,
ok so torch thing is imo ok, dammage stays the same ok, but if there will be new siege engine, maybe destructable wooden parts, or even doors id say fire arrows should be able to destroy that

It would be especially awesome to light on fire the straw roofs and burn campers to death. Oh, need 2h/polearm torches too.

LOL - all for it. Vikingr mod already has something like that included (the torches and the burning roofs, not the fire arrows). Could be "borrowed", maybe.
Fire arrows were discussed a few times already - if the game engine permits, it would be awsome if several of them (forcing more than one archer to cooperate on this) could set siege ladders and ramps on fire... because that, besides the psychological effect or scaring horses and elephants, was their purpose, against human targets good old bodkins were more effective...

Fire is best.
We could have a secondary toggle for all weapons that would set them on fire.
it would help brighten up the night battles.

Arrows on fire= more draw time, less accuracy and when hitting a target dealing DoT :D
-
Fire arrows would be awesome. They should have a bonus against shield or something and deal damage over time but indeed with reduced accuracy and reduced draw and flight speed.
-
I remember fire arrows being discussed many times before as well, never like this though. So let's talk about fire arrows. I'm loving the ability to take down anything wooden already.
- To incorporate this in-game, I would say 2.5x damage on wooden structures and the fire went out when they hit (to avoid visual lag of course)?
- Using fire arrows would require a torch in inventory and enable a mode switch on your bow.
- The mode switch would mean that all existing bows are changed before-hand to have a secondary mode with all the damage, speed, accuracy pre-set.
- You would only be able to switch your bow to this mode when it detects a torch in your inventory and as I already stated, everything stat-wise related to having fire arrows would already be pre-set on the bows.
The hardest part would probably be making the models for each kind of fire arrow (barbed/khergit/bodkin arrow on fire).
I wish the developers the best of luck if they were to implement this idea in-game.

....or just add a type of arrows called 'burning arrows'
make it do bonus to shield, and have cut damage type rather than pierce.
+damage to ladders and stuff
ta-da~

How do you make them less accurate to shoot with, etc. then?

I think fire arrows should do a bit more damage, or even better light players on fire, (or maybe even knock them down, stop, drop and roll kinda thing) be super pimp at taking out siege engines but have less accuracy, and less projectile speed.

LOL - I just visualized all those cherubim wielding a flaming FLAMberge... this would brighten up night battles indeed!
(or maybe even knock them down, stop, drop and roll kinda thing)
effects like in Medieval II Total War? Highly unrealistic (those fricking armors don't burn very well), but of course I would not object seeing our super-heros rolling like dogs trying to put out the flames... literally ROF without the L
Otherwise: full ack to what EliteDragon said, might be the best way to implement it.
But let them burn for a few seconds after impact, makes it more fun to watch.

I could see how they might implement this. Use the fire visual effects and scale them down, stick them on the tips of arrows, give the possibility of catching siege engines and peasants on fire, and decrease range/Add damage? Oh and as for Miley I don't think just 3 arrows would do the trick.

Fire catapults>Fire ballista>Greek Fire (see sea battles for crpg)>Fire arrows

Yes. Also, working firebombs.

Wait wait. As much as fire arrows are cool, especially in night time, they should do MUCH less damage, as most fire arrows are rags tied to the front of the arrow that is then lit up. The whole rags thing usually makes the pointy bit a lot less pointy. Projectile speed needs to be somehow decreased too to simulate the increased drop. DOT? Getting hit by a rag is not going to set too many soldiers on fire. In fact most would be glad for getting hit by a fire arrow instead of a real arrow.
-
Guys. Think literally. Catching anything on fire would require the use of particle effects, which not only lag like a bitch but would be a bitch to code any kind of flame "spreading" or anything "catching on fire".
I suppose the closest thing that could be done is putting in a flame effect on every flammable scenery object in the map, then manually disabling them until hit by an arrow. I think projectiles in this game act as entities, so it might be codeable. Not practical though.
The most realistic thing would be replacing the standard arrowhead with an arrowhead "covered in flame" both strung and in motion, but doing blunt damage with a severe bonus to shields (IE: Better versus barricades and shields)
