Title: "Sorrow's Anchorage" Map Redesign *Updated!*
Post by: Branches on July 15, 2012, 06:43:31 am
|==================================================|
| Explanation
| Hey guys, sorry it took me so long to submit map revisions for this. If
| your at all familiar with the original version of this map you will notice
| that I've completely redone it. I started from scratch and this map
| shares nothing with its namesake. [actually, I kept the trebuchet! xD]
|
| Why did you redo the entire map?
| I felt like a major problem with the original design was how linear it was.
| I had a very difficult time placing spawn points that were not in direct
| proximity to critical locations without having them instead located in the
| middle of nowhere. This and other issues are why I decided to redesign
| the map [I figured nobody liked the original much anyways ^^].
|
|+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
| Please Provide Feedback!
| I'm admittedly not very good at this, so I really need your feedback to
| help this version last more than a week on rotation!
|+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Sorrow's Anchorage - Redesign
//////////////////////////////////////////

Download Map Files:
.sco file: http://www.mediafire.com/?qvcojahl8o03xv2 (http://www.mediafire.com/?qvcojahl8o03xv2)
scenes.txt: http://www.mediafire.com/?g6g5tr2xjvb2z5s (http://www.mediafire.com/?g6g5tr2xjvb2z5s)

I would prefer the name to appear as "Sorrow's Anchorage"
rather than "Sorrows Anchorage" if that works out. Not super
important but if you use these files to add the map into game-
files and you know how to fix it I certainly wouldn't object if
you did! xD

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I tried to make a map that feels and plays a little differently from those
currently in rotation.

NOTE:
I took the below screenshots in the editor, which means the flag pole/flag itself
will not be visible. It is located in the center of the circular half-stone building.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Top-Down View *All below location descriptions are in reference to the top-down view*
(click to show/hide)
-Attackers Spawn in the top-left next to the ruined tower.
(click to show/hide)

-Defenders Spawn[approximate]:
 41% on boat,
(click to show/hide)
37% in the village near the top,
(click to show/hide)
16% in lower [empty] walled in area,
(click to show/hide)
6% in central [built-up] area - one in each of these two places:
under the winch room
(click to show/hide)
behind the flag building
(click to show/hide)

-Side Sally Door in the lower right.
(click to show/hide)
-Main Gate is in the middle of the wall on the left.
(click to show/hide)
-Side Standard Door is shown up from the main gate on the corner.
(click to show/hide)
-The Flag is in the circular semi-stone structure towards the central right.
*It is invisible in these screenshots as they were taken in the editor.
You can usually see the flag/flag pole protruding from the top of the
building, allowing players to check on its status.*

(click to show/hide)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Flag Room Explanation
The flag room is accessible in basically two ways:
-Through the top via a short walk over scaffolding.
(click to show/hide)
-Through the portcullis after raising it[or lowering it in this case].
(click to show/hide)

The winch used to raise the portcullis is located within the building on the
right shown in the below screenshot.
(click to show/hide)

You may gain entry to this building via the stairs shown in the picture
above or by way of one of two ladders *shown below*.
(click to show/hide)
*The second ladder shown is not moveable*

The flag itself can only be taken while on the ground floor of the flag
structure, not on the roof. So you will have to jump down into the
structure from the roof via the hole to capture the flag [if you choose
to access the flag from the roof]. If the portcullis is closed and you
wish to exit the flag room there is a one way exit *shown below*.
(click to show/hide)
*You will take no fall damage using this exit.*

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Walk Time To Flag*naked with 0 skills*
NOTE: These times exclude temporary obstructions such as doors &
          the portcullis.

-Rough Average Attacker Walk Time: approx. 50 seconds
-Rough Average Defender Walk Time: approx. 19 seconds

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Basic Routes *Edited in upon request!*

NOTE: There are basically two tiers to the map. One is mostly made
up of scaffolding the other is ground level. When a path is on the
upper tier I made the path a dotted line. When on ground level
the line is solid.

Routes To Flag *without using winch to lower [open] portcullis*
(click to show/hide)

Routes To Winch
(click to show/hide)
After the winch is used and the portcullis lowered [opened]
players would make their way to the now open portcullis
which is on the ground level of the flag building. [I do not show this]

If this is too confusing please let me know and I'll try to represent the
routes some other way.

Well that's it, please let me know what you think! ^^

hmm you definitely like to map "different" siege maps haha.  looks interesting though.

maybe post a screenshot with colored routes because its kinda hard to see where people would go...

I was one of the few who like Sorrow Anchorage, but I do like the look of this version, swampy and all of that.

Uh, making screenshots by night is not a very good way to showcase your map.

Uh, making screenshots by night is not a very good way to showcase your map.

Yea, I mentioned this.

"I apologize for the screenshots being taken at night, I wanted to take them
in-game[not in the editor] and night-time was all I could get at the time."

I couldn't get anything other than night when I was putting this together,
I tried for quite a while.

If there is some way to set the weather on hosted games that would be a
great thing to know how to do, but I haven't found a way.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I thought that things appeared visible enough in these screenshots, but
if I'm incorrect I could re-upload new ones... x'(

What's wrong about taking screenshots in the editor (just curious)?

What's wrong about taking screenshots in the editor (just curious)?

There are some graphical errors with shadows and water while in the editor,
so it makes the map look a little derpy sometimes.

Also, you can't see the flag while in the editor.

good that you've added extra detail in your post here, about spawns and walk times..but the dark screenshots kinda pointless

I like the look of the map, and outpost in the making. You should add more terrain variety, like mud/sand where the water is, rocky outcrops, more bushes and small vegetation. Stuff to make the map seem more plausible.

Upload the map and I'll take a look before hosting it on the server.

Okay, thanks for the suggestion. I'll fix up the terrain a bit
today and try to resubmit some new daytime screenshots.
(I'm sorry I haven't done this yet but all I can seem to get is
night-time and VERY rarely a sunset, which isn't ideal because
of all the shadows. If I can't get it to daytime today I'll just
take screenshots from the editor and upload those.)

I will also include a link to the map files.

Yea, I'm sorry about this, I guess my screen brightness was kinda
high and/or my room was kinda dark cause they didn't seem too bad
to me at the time. If I'd have realized how dark they were I would
have taken them in the editor. Sorry again, I'll get right on this!

THANKS AGAIN! ^^

Alright so, I've added in foliage and terrain variety and
I've updated the screenshots so they are now taken
during daytime within the editor!

I've also included the map files so you guys can get a
closer look yourselves if you happen to want to.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also, you can't see the flag while in the editor.

I guess it turns out that this isn't entirely true. I didn't realize that when you
pressed "H" in the editor it corrects the graphical errors with water.

So, the only downside of editor screenshots is the invisible flag/flagpole.

updated screenshots help....sort of a castle in the swamp being renovated? :)

aesthetically, i would paint some other ground textures here and there for variance, like maybe sand along the shore lines a bit here and there, some earth somewhere, maybe a path texture or village texture in places where people would walk....etc.

maybe a bush or two? some rocks?

as for balance...as with all of these, hard to tell till its in, but seems like it could work.

Yea, it's sorta a new stronghold being constructed in a marsh, but it's fairly small
and made of wood because all the bigger stone castles sunk into the marsh.

Yea I do have other textures in the ocean, under the half-built
structures in the settlement and along the... rivers? But I colored
the ground to change the shade of green. So, even though it's
re-textured I think everything ends up just looking green. ^^

I could try to add more color to it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Also I did add in foliage and rocks, do you think I should have more?
I guess it doesn't show up in most of the screenshots because I
didn't put any in the settlement itself, which is where I took most
screenshots. But look at this one! ^^

(click to show/hide)
That's pretty much what I have all around outside the settlement
as far as foliage, also there are rocks out there too. (Just not in this
picture).

hmmm, I suppose I could add in more! Do you think I should?

maybe its that green color....its like 70's green :(

might be better off to go with the various textures rather than the color painting...those have built in variance for a more real look.
up to you!

Yea, you might be right, I'll mess around with it a little more.
Thanks! ^^
