Quick question.
How can you correctly grade someone grading another person's paper if you do not grade the papers yourself?
Just something that was on my mind.

believe it or not, I believe if someone is honest and educated enough to grade these (something that will take 1 hour max, as apposed to hundreds of hours grinding) then they are most likely of sting enough moral fibre to honestly distribute the looms.

I believe you are close, but you should convert those inches to fit the metric system (Used by more scientists), so the answer should be 2032 millimetres.

Alright then, let's get to work. English is not my primary language, so I think native british or americans got the edge on this one. But still, worth a try.

It's finished, please take a look. Note that chadz is a name specifically typed in lowercase and therefore overrules typical elements like starting with a capital letter. I assume "Evil Knight" is also a name.

The unfortunate assassination of chadz.

One day in the enchanted forest an elf was playing a game on her computer (it is was made of vines and leafs and the mouse is was a big acorn). She was an elf princess. She was playingh playing the game mod "CRPG" for Mound Mount & Blade computer game. The elf was playing really good well and was at the top of the score board. She shooted shot her bow and hit pheasant a peasant. She shotted shot her bow and killed a horse. "Sorry horsey" she said, but it wasn't the horses fault. His owner was an the Evil Night Knight. Then she shooted shot the Evil Knight because he was SLOW slow, and made a fat joke at about him.

As they marshed marched across the land killing everyone, the Evil Night Knight turned around and told them “Wait, our own guys is an archer.” and Then they killed the archer and there their score went down but they did not care because they were a very angery mob.
The Evil Knight found his new target later. It was the king of the city, chadz. He was a good king and gave coins to his pesents peasants so they could go buy a candy bar at the store if they harvestered harvested all their wheat and finched finished their homework on time. But the Evil Nihgt Knight was angery about his died angry about his death, and he went to fight king chadz.
King chadz was having a feast right when the Evil Night Knight attacked. He said “Oh, not now!” and stood up really fast. His food fell, all the equus africanus asinus hambubgers donkey hamburgers, his smashed potatoes, all the peas, and even his milk got spilled.

The Evil Knight knocked on his castle door and said “chadz I come for you’re your blood now! I lost my hunt and now you will pay!”. chadz was scared because his army was on vacation at Disney world this week. They went to the beach too and drank out of a coconut. He put on his armor, and took his sword and says said to himself “I will do my best but I can't beat them all allone by myself”
Juts Just then, a window breaked broke and the elf princess came in. She said “elfs are good at have good hearing and I hear you are in troubel trouble good king.. That bad knight is after me”. They made a high five and kicked the door open to go beat the Evil Night Knight.

The Evil Knight was listening the whole time and he was ready to murder! He took out his big axe and said “come fight me and I will chop your head off! And then I will kick it out the window!” His army was so scared that they hided under the tables and slipped on chadz’s spilled food.
Chads chadz fought with honor and power but the Evil Knight was making a rage enraged at him. He almost knocked the sword out of chadzs hands seven times! The elf princess took out her bow & arrows and made her aimed. She waited for the perfect time to shoot her arrow into the Evil Knight and make this his end.
She let go of her fingers and the arrow went shot out. chadz moved in the way and it went threw the middle of his head and he died.

"Sorry horsey" she said, but it wasn't the horse's fault.

Choose for me an essay, and i'll correct it with pleasure.
Let's just have a bunch of international people correcting the first version of the essay, and then have a good british with a master degree in spelling or whatever, wich will provide the second and last version. What do you think ?

I'll grade the essays if you'd like.

I have a degree in English, and I worked as a writing tutor for a couple semesters back in college.

However, I also submitted my own essay in the contest.  If I grade, I will take myself out of the competition.  I'll judge impartially based on grammar and spelling only.

Let me know if you'd like me to do the grading!

Spelling is important in creative writing. Grammar, for the most part, in regards to comma splicing and other various forms of punctuation are largely left to creative license. The only correct way to grade any piece of creative writing is for spelling errors. Even an incomplete sentence can be correct in creative writing.

For example:

He knew what was coming. Death. He walked down the dark hallway towards the door. His breath quickened. He reached for the door knob. Heat. Fire. His eyes widened as he knew the way of his demise. He gritted his teeth. Burning.

"Such a horrible way to die," he thought to himself before smiling and opening the door. Letting death in.

----

The above little snippet I just wrote is 100% grammatically correct according to typical creative writing rules. I added in several incomplete sentences and even a run on, but it's still correct.

Edit: If you would like for me to grade them I will. I have taken three collegiate level creative writing courses. Got 2 A's and a B. I changed majors away from English with a creative writing concentration since I didn't want to work at Starbucks, but I still love writing.

That is true Kutt.  It poses some problems for grading.  Perhaps the content of the essays themselves are important.  Did the author intend a creative writing piece, or a more formal essay?  At least we can go on spelling/punctuation for the most part.

Whoever is chosen to grade might have to consult Looshus on this, unless he is too busy to be bothered with such "drivel" and trusts the grader to use their best judgement.

Who says the grading should be done by only one person. I think a small jury would be more appropriate. You two would get my vote for being in the jury, personally.
Title: Re: Looshususus 17 loom point contest update.
Post by: TugBoat on June 19, 2012, 06:35:29 pm
I think it would be impossible to do an essay about chaz being assassinated unless the topic were more narrow. It seems that all of the contestants, myself included, chose to go the route of fiction

I think it should be done by 1 person because:
1-grading between several people would be inconsistent and unfair.
2-having everyone on the jury grade everything would be too much work
3-Looshus gives 5 looms for the grader...if he keeps passing them out like this there'll be none left for the prize! :)
4- grading on punctuation/spelling alone is pretty straightforward and doesn't need too many people.

Just my opinion!

-1 point
Misspellang. Or P'unctuation errors.
-2 points
run on sentences, as they tend to distract from what would otherwise be a perfectly normal sentence that conveys its point in a timely manner while keeping with in a well defined and concise border or dots, small hash marks, colons, and semicolons which when added together form a language that most english speakers collectively define as constituting a well formed and productive society of the civilization of sentences.
-3 points
Obvious grammatical fallacies.
-10 points
No capital letters on names, or at the start of a sentence.

Elf Princess, you indeed have a very very low score, according to my grading method.  You reached the max of -100.
However, if I kept grading lower, someone else would have done even worse.

Everkistus would have been like -400 probably, because for some reason he never wanted to capitalize "chadz", and that's minus 10 points each time (according to looshus).  He used chadz's name a lot in his essay...

It's funny because you were making yours bad on purpose.  He was trying to do it well and BOMBED.  lol!!

-10 points for not capitalizing chadz? He didn't say that, he said for not capitalizing names. If his name is intentionally lower case at the start, then that's how it should be. like e. e. cummings, for example. When he writes his own name, it is lower case. chadz's user name is lower case, therefore nothing should be counted off for capitalizing his name.

well it's possible chadz himself spelled his name incorrectly.  Like if my name is John and I write is john, I'm doing it wrong.  Just because its my name doesn't mean I can change the rules of the English language.  Someone like e. e. cummings was a big enough player to do something like that.  chadz is big in the computer modding world, but not necessarily the English language world...so I think it can go either way on this one.

I think Looshus should weigh in on it, whenever he has time to take a look.  That may be best.
