Im a huge fan of the Bec, hits very hard/ fast swing but must be good at maual blocking due to its short length.

If your not very good at manual blocking stick with the longer weapons!

Do you ride horses at all?  The bec cannot be used on horseback at all, while the long hafted blade can horse slash.

Edit: Turns out the bec can be used on horseback and my source is outdated or just wrong.

Everyone uses a Bec, go for something more original. I had one and just felt dirty at how easy it was to kill people with...

I've never used polearms, but just picked up a pike from the ground to do something about horses. I found it laughably easy to stop them with one WPF.

So, my question: What's considered the entry-level polearm, just for anti-cav purposes? I don't necessarily want to kill the horse, but some damage would certainly be nice. Should I just go for a spear, or do I really need a pike for the basic thing? Or don't even go as high as a spear, and a simple pitchfork will do?

I don't intend to spend any WPF for polearms or anything, so it's definitely not for melee combat. Just something to counter annoying ponies.

Most cav will have heavy lances with pretty good range i would recomned u getting a pike ;p

There's a limit to how low I can sink, and I draw the line at actual farm equipment.

Go for the pike if you wanna rape cavalry. It's funny, I'm putting all wpf into polearms in order to *eventually* go cavalry. Until then I fight on foot with spear and sheild. Yet I find myself killing lots of cavalry! I love picking up pikes: they rape horses heartily, and are also good if you have teammates around.

If you JUST want a polearm to kill ponies use a pike. If not, then any old spear will work. Even a pitchfork can be effective. Be careful though, for most cavalry (as Kale said) use heavy lances or something with good range. I still say pike ftw... Actually, ima go buy one now :D

IMO, if you are using polearms use thrusting polearms. Don't bother with swinging polearms - if you want to swing, 2H is much better at that. Pike, awlpike, some forks, they are all good. Use with both hands.
And of course, you want heavy lance. Horses are stronger than ever - also, difficult to upkeep, but stronger than ever. You want one from time to time.

If you have pretty good/high PS I like the Arena Lance instead of the boar spear because it's cheap, swingable, no penalty with shield and is fast.

You should have gone for the pike. Shorter spears need good timing, or you will get lanced instead (heavy lance has reach 190).

As for the hafted blades: it's not only 2 speed versus 2 dmg, regular is also 21cm shorter. I would take long. Actually I would take neither and go for long hafted knobbed mace, which is blunt damage (31 blunt hurts more than 38 cut against armor 34+), longer than regular hafted blade and faster than long hafted blade. Plus it got knockdown.

turn around very now and again and look at the battlefield behind you. Problem solved.

hahaha you could spin like a fucking top and it makes no difference to the fact that cavalry will choose when and where to fight you. All a foot dude can do is react. Polearms are no counter whatsoever.

You'll have issues upkeeping a destrier. A palfrey is good enough for most purposes, a bit squishy, sure... but still good enough.

That's odd because I tend to kill at least 2 horses every round with throwing axes or war darts, simply with a little bit of battlefield awareness.

Of course I see many of my teammates just take it in the @ss over and over again because they are so focused on rushing to the main battle area, not even scanning the whole field
to see those 3 or 4 cav coming from the rear left flank....

I've warned them till im blue in the face, but they don't seem to care.

The bec cannot be used on horseback at all, while the long hafted blade can horse slash.

Actually, the Bec de Corbin can be used on horseback, and it can horse slash. You can test this in Single Player.

As for the original question, I like using the Pike both at close range and at its maximum reach. It's also extremely effective for supporting teammates.

Ah, I see that is reflected in the store too.  Is that new with the patch, or a longstanding error in that list of weapon abilities?

It was new with the upkeep patch. As of .210, however, I believe the Bec de Corbin can only be used to stab on horseback.
