Title: Best Polearm?
Post by: Akryn on March 21, 2011, 06:17:32 pm
EDIT: I now know a lot of people use the Pike, War Spear and Awlpike. I'm sorry for not including them.

I've been wondering recently what people think the best Polearm is. I've included some of the Polearms I think which are used the most (even though there's still 13 options). If I have missed a common one out, please let me know.

You have to vote first before you can see the results - this is in an attempt to make your own vote not depend on someone else's who has already voted. I have an idea what will come out on top, but we'll see how it will go.

If you vote, I would greatly appreciate it if you would leave a reason why you chose what you did.

There are different types of polearms so you can't just compare them all with one another.

Anyway, I use the heavy lance for most of my kills, so it's the best weapon for me.
After that it's probably the horse bumps... :)

It's also good while on foot as long as you stay out of duels and don't get overwhelmed by enemies ofc.

Yeah, I thought of that after I posted the poll. Most cav will just choose the lance.

Gah! I chose the wrong option. I meant to pick "Long Hafted Spiked Mace", but I accidently chose "Long Hafted Knobbed Mace".

Anyways this weapon, the Long Hafted Spiked Mace, is pretty incredible for all those "in your face" polearm needs. I greatly prefer it to the Bec de Corbin... In fact I don't know why you would choose the Bec over this weapon, unless for style considerations.

Long Hafted Spiked Mace
Cost: 4745 (Almost half the price of the Bec)
spd rtng 94 (Faster than the Bec)
weapon length 138 (Much longer than the Bec)
swing damage 34, blunt (Less damage - but wait, it's blunt damage, so it ends up doing more damage to armored peeps)
thrust damage 20 blunt (The *only* downside, a little less thrust damage)
Knockdown (Okay this is icing on the cake - random chance to knock somebody down = 1v1 insta win)

Compare to the Bec de Corbin

Cost: 7312 (Expensive)
spd rtng 93 (Slower)
weapon length 120 (Shorter)
swing damage 36, pierce (Pierce damage = less than or equal damage)
thrust damage 26 pierce (More damage)

Second to the long hafted spiked mace I'd say some favorites are the ashwood pike and the war spear... And of course my trusty Heavy Lance.

+1 Awesome to you for the detailed info.

That's what I used to use then retired and started using Xbow and 2H (which I regret) but used Polearm before I retired. Unfortunately I made my character as a 1H with shield so I never got the full Polearm experience as it was a last few levels choice.

I regret heirlooming the Sniper Xbow and want to know which Polearm to heirloom for my next gen... hence the purpose of this poll. :)

The Spiked Mace is a big contender.

Glaive or Long Hafted Blade.

I would say Long Hafted Blade is the best, but it has "oriental look", and is not really suited for my western armor. So for all the Cloth armor users, Ninjas and Samurais - Long Hafted Blade, for western armors - Glaive.

Why? Well, they are both well-rounded weapons. With skill - you can take them to any situation and win. Some will always prefer a "speciality" weapon with range, damage or speed bonus compared to others, and are dependent on certain tactics. But with a Long Hafted Blade, you are always ready. And its cheap.

Edit:
(click to show/hide)

I dont like Bec, it gives me bad memories from "original" cRPG, but it does pierce damage, so its more effective against armored enemies.
The way you hold weapon means a lot, I am not saying its the case, but lets say Long Spiked Club ( 126 range ) is NOT longer then German Greatsword. Needs to be tested at least.

I'd like to point out that in c-rpg, the damage ceiling for pierce is much higher. If your PS is high enough, pierce actually does MORE damage than blunt against armor. You just lose the knockdown.

I still prefer the bec to the long hafted spiked mace. At masterwork the the mace has +18 length and knockdown, while the bec has +2 dmg on swing, +6 dmg thrust, +1 speed and is pierce, which I prefer to blunt. The knockdown is nice, I'll give it that, but the length is give and take. In the open field you have an advantage over shorter weapons, but in enclosed spaces with not much room to swing the bec will glance less and that's important to me as I play siege primarily. Bec all the way.

Long hafted spiked mace is my favorite ground supremacy weopon with that uber knockdown.  It really equalizes an outnumbered fight, has great reach and a really reasonable speed for it's abilities.  Hits like a pimp on steroids too.

Prepatch with the 200+ wpf I loved the Glaive...spamming it anyways.  Post patch I have been forced to learn to parry and the spiked mace seems resilient in close quartered combat via multiple opponents once you have a decent amount of PS.

None of the above, I'd say the Swiss Halberd or Pike are the best.

Warspear is my favourite, hard to teamkill with but packs a punch when stabbing, and the side swings are fast and confusing :)

Oops I forget to mention warspear as well!  Epic spamming weopon that keeps them at bay and from what I saw sends the average player running.  It hits a little soft but is amazing for parrying for some reason.  Maybe the length adds a visual aid?

I change my 2nd fave to warspear now.

Aside from the fact that the Bec has a better thrust is better in small areas due to the shorter length, and the thrust can stop a horse dead.  I like the mace, but the bec is a better weapon imo

pierce do more than blunt to armor.

and even trust attack of  spiked mace do blunt

I think that if you look at pure kill count the heavy lance is the most used polearm. Most used = best right?  :P

For it would be LHSM or LHB. I use LHB cause its ninja style but the LHSM has awesome knockdown.

It's the added length of the mace that gets the vote.  That baseball bat swing is just deadly, it always has a way of just clipping an opponent when they think they are clear - pirouette to fail knockdown - thrust for the moneyshot - done...

My take on this is based on my STR build

My double heirloomed great axe packs a huge punch, bonus to shield, balanced, great range, great speed

Facing a sword and board? no problem when you chop their shield in half with 1-3 hits

Actualy, blunt does more dmg to armor.

Atleast acording to the dmg calculator

WHY IS EVERYONE OVER LOOKING LONG MAUL!

Or English Bill!

Or Normal Poleaxe!

There are so many good polearms, it all depends on your style and taste preferences.

I retract my bec vote. Pike ftw!

Honest to god I've become very good with the pike, even in one on one fights its really underestimated. Regular spear is really good if used w/ sheild (my lowish sheild skill makes using slower weapon like warspear harder).

I still prefer the Bec. It's just a great weapon for when my horse is taken down during cav'ing and also I'm horrible at using the long-length weapons effectively cause I'm not able to tell how far I can actually reach, lol.

Pikes and other poles with only 2 attacks should get new super thrust mode. Gives them one, massive attack direction.

Try lots of weapons and decide on your favourite. Any weapon can be super effective in the right hands and you need to find the weapon thats right for you.

War spears speed makes it a great weapon 1v1 but doesnt offer the killing power of higher teir polearms in a fight against multiple opponents.

As a support weapon its awesome when coupled with shield as long as you can deal with only 1 attack direction. On par with pike infact IMO.

short spear on a 3/36 build = LOL

Oh, and Nice job not including pike/awlpike/ etc.
Nobody mentioned the battle fork, the best Shield/spear combo weapon?
this thread consists of side swinging rambo weapons, not teamwork/support weapons.
I voted glaive, of the list that is most beastly imo. It is almost god tier for teamwork and can sideswing so it i good in single battles.
Title: Re: Best Polearm?

For shield/polearm: Battle fork when on foot, Heavy lance on horseback

Just polearm infantry: Awlpike.

I don't care an awlpike has only 2 attackdirections. It's the reason most people underestimate it. When you time it right you can curve stabs around teammates to poke enemies and in 1v1 it's not too bad. Again, timing and footwork are crucial.
I'm going to masterwork my awlpike. Will take me quite some time, but who cares :P

Pike is very lethal. Reasons beeing:

- Support. You can support you teammates from an safe distance meaning you put your enemy on the defensive.
- Protection in Groups. Remember playing with 5 other Pikeman and when we stuck together we couldn't be harmed. If someone was about to finish me of a frienly pike would stick in his side. If someone was going to kill an ally I stabbed him with pike etc.
- Range. Really its all the pike is about, you can stab at the enemy while keeping your distance. If your in a group that is, one on one you are better of dropping the pike and using a sidearm.

Only downsides:

- Ranged Fire: When using pike you have no protection from projectiles. Which can be helped by just using a shield till your closed but I always like to play more realistic pikeman.
- One on one: Your pretty much dead unless you drop it.

Currently also use the Warspear/Shield combo for Germanic Warrior but also came to like to use Light Lance/Shield combo instead. This gives me the same advantages a pike gives me while I can still use a shield for protection and the lance looks more "realistic" as well.
