Title: Favourite Movies
Post by: BlameMeForTheNoise on April 29, 2012, 01:05:21 am
Lets get some favourite movies going. I need more input.
"Favourite", mind you. Not necessarily "good" or "best" movies. Don't be afraid to post movies with bad reviews.
I just want to know what your personal tastes in movies are and if maybe there is something for me, which I don't know yet but should check out...
Bonus points for relatively unknown stuff.
Here are some of mine in no particular order:

I like movies that are a bit mysterious and leave you wondering "WHAT THE HELL DID I JUST WATCH?!". It's really nice movie once you kinda think about it more and maybe get a hold of it :D. Not to mention that the scenery and colors in that movie look awesome

You might like Robo Geisha and Tokyo Gore police even more, then.I asked myself that Question throughout the whole length of those.

Btw, yes, the Scenery etc. was kinda nice in Valhalla Rising, but the rest...Man it pretty much looks like an artistic attempt on movies some weird kind of idiot artist made "Oh look that movie is so deep, the mai ncharacter cant speak and is in love with a little boy" and shit :D

Well the context has to be somewhat interesting to me. Seems like those are somekind of Japan stuff which I'm not too greatly into. Especially if they play with symbolism and some old mythologies etc like in Valhalla Rising, I'm most likely getting nothing out of them.

My thoughts:
Valhalla Rising requires some knowledge of Scandinavian mythology and symbolism. When I watched the movie for second time, to me it's about how Christianity replaces the old Gods and human gets driven further away from the nature. The main character (Mads Mikkelsen) also refers to Odin (one eye just like Oden has according to Edda). As so he also represents Scandinavian mythology as a whole (inprisonment and finally just forced to deal with Christianity).

The new land they enter is ofc America and the hostile people are indians (see the way they bury the dead, it's the old indian cemetary way.) Collecting rocks and piling them up is old tradition here in Northern Europe and I think it refers to the rock piles found in North America  (different place than the longhouses where vikings are assumed to land America).

I bet there is still a lot stuff I'm not able to get a hold on, but these things I think I've understood correctly

Ok so far the movies I've not seen and which sparked my interest are:

The Outlaw Josey Wales,
A Dirty Carnival,
La Haine
and
Walk the line

Next on my Watch-Again-List are:
Clerks,
Dance with wolves
and
In Bruges

for everyone who liked In Bruges, I sincerely recommend "The Guard". Directed by the brother of the director of In Bruges. Excellent dialogue and writing:

If you like Clint's movies I would like to recommend also "Where eagles dare". It's not black and white movie like in that pic. Really twisted plot. I liked it because it was so twisted and situation kept changing all the time. chocolate chip cookies and shit. Really enjoyable piece of movie history imo. I left some good movies out of my list because they are kinda obvious Clint pieces too. Like Gran Torino, Dirty Harry etc.

Oh and Heartbreak Ridge belongs to that list. Simply because it is awesome and maybe underrated movie. It also has this awesome scene with a quote to remember ^^. Maybe some Duke Nukem named guy ripped the shit down that neck :D

Respect. :)

From what I can assume about your taste, perhaps you should watch Melancholia, Pi and Dark City if you haven't. Seems you like alternative mindfucks.. :D Then watch Antichrist too. Shutter Island and many other films are also great, but too much in that direction would be too mainstream to fit your list, besides you've probably seen them.

Check out some of the old noires. Double Indemnity and Sunset Boulevard should fit nicely to what I assume you like.

*Perhaps you know Vanilla sky is a remake of "Open Your Eyes", a very decent spanish film. Another fun film I saw lately is the italian film:  Una pura formalità (aka A Pure Formality) With Polanski and Depardieu as the main characters. It also has the themes going through your list.
Title: Re: Favourite Movies

Only seen Dark City and Shutter Island of those you mentioned, and both a pretty good too, especially Shutter Island. I will look into those others sometime, thx

Was mostly trying to put together a mindfuck list since someone mentioned Eraserhead. My main list is on page 1, so I don't just like this type in the list :D. That mindfuck list are all worth watching though imo

I've read pretty much everything by Philip K Dick and his stories can have that kind of theme going through them. Just wish we had more PKD movies, only decent one is Blade Runner (which is really just an adaptation) and A Scanner Darkly, which wasn't bad but didn't quite have the impact of the book. Minority Report was also decentish but don't think it had much in common with the book iirc

Grumbs watch The Fountain (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0414993/) if you haven't. Maybe you won't like the whole movie, but conquistador part is pure gold. I wish Aronofsky made the whole movie about it, it would be one of the best I've ever watched.

Story is confusing but you'll definitely understand the main theme of the movie. Picture and photography are simply beautiful, soundtrack is exquisite and acting is top notch (best ever performance for Hugh Jackman).

For me, movie is like one of Borges novels in motion (which I enjoy immensely).

Other than that I really like the realism presented in Bullet (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115781/) or some movies which most people find boring and even repulsing, like The Postman (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119925/).

And of course 13th Warrior, my favorite fantasy movie. My favorite sci-fi movie is Robocop, I like brutality presented in that movie.
Title: Re: Favourite Movies
Post by: Thomek on April 30, 2012, 12:45:00 am
Ah but there are so many good movies, I don't know where to start..

Angel Heart is a good one as mentioned earlier.
If you like Leone films, be sure to watch Once Upon a Time in the West. Epic western.
Hitchcock films are also a must for you. Vertigo, North by Northwest and Rear Window..

Which leads us to the man behind Starship Troopers. Paul Verhoven, a very "funny" director. Try to watch Basic Instinct again, now with Ironic Hitchcock glasses. It's great great entertainment.

Did you see Twin Peaks the first season? If you like Lynch.. This is as good as it gets. You can safely skip the second season btw.. But NOT the first!

You saw Enter The Void? It goes well with a joint.

Personally, I like everything by Tarkovsky and Trier, the great great great finnish director Aki Kaurosmaki, Spielberg, and actually I like everything, good or bad!

so yeah.. :D

And documentaries! (almost) everything by Herzog:

Thanks Leshma I heard of The Fountain before but haven't got around to seeing it yet. I haven't actually heard of Borges, anything in particular by him I should read?

Thomek Twin Peaks has been on my list of stuff to watch for ages. I have a collection of Hitchcock films, watched most of them now. Haven't seen the Leone western yet or Enter the Void

I do want to get into foreign cinema. Only seen Stalker by Tarkovsky which was quite a unique film. La Haine which I mentioned before is really worth a watch. Apart from that, Pan's Labyrinth was OK and I like the old John Woo movies.

In term of documentaries, be sure to watch The Century of the Self at some point.

Threads is a movie in a faux documentary style about nuclear war thats worth a watch. Am quite a fan of post apocalyptic scenarios/nuclear war movies, Dr Strangelove etc. Saw The Road semi recently which was pretty good for a post apocalyptic movie. Oh and The Book of Eli wasn't bad

Also a big fan of WW2 stuff. If you want to see a hard boiled realism based WW2 movie, then try Come and See

Also, Takeshi Kitano have made some great films. My favorite is Hana-Bi. Also, long time ago I watched some yakuza films by japanese director Sabu. Dangan Runner, Monday and Postman Blues are worth a watch.

Three similarly themed movies I find interesting:

Cannibal Holocaust (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078935/)

Apocalypse Now Director's Cut (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078788/)

Men Behind the Sun (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093170/)

Cannibal Holocaust' and Apocalypse Now (like Far Cry 2 btw) uses the old litterary motif from Joseph Conrad's book of 1902 'Heart of Darkness' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heart_of_Darkness), serving as a sober comment on Western imperial and colonial mindset and mechanisms, and how easily the thin crust of civilization (illusory or otherwise) gives in to savagery. The Director's Cut of 'Apocalypse Now' adds the massacres of civilians cencorship omitted (among other scenes).

Men Behind the Sun is a Hong Kong movie showing the history of Unit 731, a covert warfare research and development unit of the Imperial Japanese Army, and the atrocities commited here, mostly chemical and biological experimentation on prisoners, and how - like in chocolate chip cookie Germany (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/chocolate chip cookie_human_experimentation) or Cold War US (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unethical_human_experimentation_in_the_United_States) - this kind of science is morally justified as part of the war effort.

Cannibal Holocaust and Men Behind the Sun are basically horror movies.

@Thomek, if you like Trier and haven't seen it I must recommend the original (Danish) version of 'Riget/the Kingdom' (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108906/).

Cannibal Holocaust?Man you serious?

That Movie belongs to the wave of Cannibal Movies at those times and it´s only aim was pretty much to be as shocking as it could lol.

Real Animal - killings and stuff...The Cannibals rape the bitch before they eat her and shit :D

Man that crap was some seriously fucked up stuff.

And not Horror at all.

It´s more like a snuff Film.

Dont watch it if you aren´t into violence, and even if you are, better watch it with some friends so you can laugh at all that shit.
