Title: I need a gaming mouse...
Post by: micah243 on January 26, 2012, 07:22:59 am
Ok right now I have a pretty much broken mx518. It served me well since i have had this computer but my fiance recently spilled punch all over it :( so the scroll will now auto scroll down sometimes. That is definitely not good when i am playing and my weapon gets unequpied lol.. and it also just doesnt track right anymore. Anyway, what can you guys recommend for a good mouse? I am really looking at the logitech g9x. Would like to know what types you guys use. :) thanks

Buying a super expensive mouse is just retarded. Super cheap ones are quite crap too though.

Just buy something priced similiarily as MX518. I had some Razer before my MX518 and it wasn't really noticeably better or worse than this one. Next time my mouse starts breaking up chances are I'll try something else.

Im not really into the trackball mouses, they have just never worked well for me. And yea some of the Razors run over 100 dollars.. Thats retarded. G9x is 64 dollars and looks pretty badass. So i think I am going to order that. And i just ordered my internet upgraded from 3mbps to 12mbps. So now hopefully with my ping lower than 100 I can kill Saul a little more often ;)

I switched my MX518 for Razer Deathadder. Really like it, it has 2x the dpi and claw grip.

Logitech G5 refresh (the blue one). At first it was a bit strange because of the rough surface but I really like it.
Hmm... seems like its not produced anymore, G500 seems to be the successor.

It is basically the natural evolution of the MX 518. It is what you expect from a MX 518 but with modern features like weight cartridges and programmable buttons. Great polling rate and high DPI. You can adjust sensitivity on the fly, too. It is on sale for 47.99 @ newegg

EDIT: don't be fooled by gimmicky "gaming" mice like anything from Razer.

Cheap, precise, and durable. Works well even after 6 years of daily exploitation. It felt a bit too light, when i first changed from G5, but i got used to it quickly. When, and IF it ever breaks, i will buy the same one again. ( i guess i am getting older, and unwilling to try new things... :) )

Using it with this mouse pad btw, and had to add 3 "gliding" thingies to the bottom of the mouse after about 1-2 years of usage:

I used to really like Razer mice of which I tried a handful or so, then the Roccat Kone came out and I tried that only like so many others to have the scroll key give up on me. Then I tried Logitech mice for a bit, and though the G series has a good quality feel to it I don't think they are as good for claw and finger grip (which I prefer) as most of the Roccat and Razer mice. Then Roccat launched its improved version of the Roccat Kone (now with a '+' in the name) and like some of Roccat's other products the second generation have mostly outdone the competition in all aspects.

Roccat Kone+

Specs (http://www.roccat.org/Products/Gaming-Mice/ROCCAT-Kone-/)
Review (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olx8BasVdTw)

Best mouse I've ever had, hands down. The quality can be felt in all the parts, nice rubber surface, good responsive keys, metal scroll key for durability, high end stats (like 6000dpi as if you'd ever want to use that much), due to its relative size and shape ergonomic for both claw, finger and palm grip, great software pack with lots of customization options (easy changing of general values, colors or macros and such), clip in weights, surface scanner and a tracking and distance control unit under the mouse.

I've put mine to extensive use for well over two years now and it's as good as the day I bought it. Been using it with the Taito (http://www.roccat.org/Products/Gaming-Mousepads/ROCCAT-Taito-Series/) mousepad.

that's what i use and it is pretty good

I also use this, works very nice, only problem is that I use it on the arm of a recliner so I have to clean the sensor with a Q-tip every couple of days, if I don't clean it then the laser gets dusty and the cursor speed slows & becomes very inaccurate, not that big of a problem though as long as the world doesn't run out of Q-tips

I ended up ordering the G9X off of Newegg. From what I read it really blows anything else away in a lot of areas. Im a pretty serious gamer so its a good investment for me. I have always heard bad things about Razor mice so i have tended to stay away from them. So logitech G9X for me :) thanks all you guys for your opinions.

I use a first-gen G9 and I hate it for this game and any FPS.  Both grips are bad for me and it seems to want to twist rather than move perfectly horizontally.  I find that I am hooked on the scroll wheel's tilt function though; really handy.

--glad I only paid 60(30USD). [It was 60USD but after asking Logitech support about a minor issue they sent me a second one, free of charge.  Haven't had cause to open the second yet.]

I'd like to give that Roccat Kone+ a try but Roccat products aren't sold in the US or Canada.

Yep you don't need gimmicky crap on a mouse, and DPI won't make you better, in fact DPI is pretty much only needed if you have a high resolution or very high sensitivity. 400-800 is good for most people. If you look at crazy aimers in games like CS or Quake they all use 400 DPI and optical sensors

You should use a mouse that feels comfortable too, just get another mx518 or G400.

Didn't see this..G9x is much better than the G9 (better sensor), but you have to like the shape really. Its quite peculiar but if you use finger tips it might not matter. Some will love it too I suppose no matter how they hold it

DPI is used for different things. A relatively high DPI is good for speed for example for assault players while a low DPI will make you more accurate and is good for snipers and such. But yeah, anything above 2000 is overkill.

Exactly! It does transform to fit your hand. It's also weighted and you can adjust that as well. 4000 dpi is plenty for me. It is a little pricy, but I use my mouse more than I use my shoes. I can pay at least as much for it

Got my G9X in today! gotta say it is pretty badass :). It takes some getting used to but ive been playing with it for lilke 45 minutes and im almost adjusted. Playing with dpi set to 5000 by the way :P. I do not know how anyoneeeee could use 400 or 800 for anything. 5000 is basically instant. I admit takes a sec to get used to but now I pretty much have it figured out. So definetly give the G9X 2 thumbs up, just got to get used to the shape and sensitivity first.

That is true if you can't change your sensitivity settings. DPI both makes your mouse more sensitive and more accurate. The trick is to increase DPI and decrease the sensitivity scale as much as possible, to get the most accurate settings without being over sensitive.

That is true if you can't change your sensitivity settings. DPI both makes your mouse more sensitive and more accurate. The trick is to increase DPI and decrease the sensitivity scale as much as possible, to get the most accurate settings without being over sensitive.

You can set the DPI to max and you won't skip pixels, but its not quite right that you make the mouse more accurate with higher DPI. Increasing DPI can make it less accurate in some ways. If you want 1:1 input/output you want to have no negative acceleration and for the sensor to be working at its optimal setting. Usually thats at its lowest DPI. The monitor is made up of pixels, and as long as you don't skip over them you have enough DPI on the mouse. Each mouse has a malfunction speed, and increasing the DPI lowers the speed you can move it at while still getting 1:1 response (so your movements are accurately represented in game)

DPI is a lot of BS really, just use what you like in windows but don't get sucked into the marketing side of it. You can work out how much DPI you might benefit from with a formula, here: http://www.esreality.com/?a=longpost&id=1265679&page=2 . Its still not really that important even if you do skip pixels imo. You can just set to max if you want but that can come with other issues, especially if the sensor isn't that good, and especially with laser mice

This is quite beyond what a normal user needs to care about though lol. Just use what you like in windows imo and forget about DPI
