Title: Martial Arts in CRPG
Post by: Thanatos on January 25, 2012, 07:19:39 pm
There should be a new skill where you are able to fight with martial arts.. Be able to disarm your opponent, knock them down with a kick to their knee, and grapple them, etc..

This would be an interesting feature for those who seek to fight unarmed combat.

If you've ever seen Red Cliff, you'll probably know the guy I'm talking about and (to be honest I don't remember his name) how he actually tackles a heavy warhorse down.  He's the one with the monkey-faced beard, and he goes around punching spears in half and shit.

I want to see that in cRPG.

Lies, they'd be too busy catching your projectiles whilst doing spins & front flips in the air to even bother.

I want this, only if headbutt is added so I can practice Shaolin Iron-head technique. Instead of learning to use this technique through points it should be based on practice by headbutting a wall.

The head but idea sounds great. Would be so much better than the lame arse kick if you just ploughed your helmet into people.

I've mentioned the weapon disarming in the past but I don't know if there would be a way to properly balance it. It would be equally amusing and frustrating approaching someone who puts their weapon away and you wouldn't be able to disarm holding a shield.

Do you people seriously believe that medieval people fought like we do in Warband, just spamming weapons around?

Of course martial arts were essential part of the combat. Cheap tricks also. Sadly we have only one in crpg, kickslash...

Martial arts =/= weeaboo

Quote
The term martial art has become heavily associated with the fighting arts of eastern Asia, but was originally used in regard to the combat systems of Europe as early as the 1550s. An English fencing manual of 1639 used the term in reference specifically to the "Science and Art" of swordplay. The term is ultimately derived from Latin, martial arts being the "Arts of Mars," the Roman god of war

In order to make an unarmed 'pugilist' weapon choice become viable - we would first need a way to disarm people, I suggest a shield bash (replaces kick when holding shield block, has the same range and can't be spammed) which would cause the victims weapon to spin off a short distance. Then we might see more players willing to throw a punch out of desperation.

There should be shield bash at least. It was a very common attack in battles.

Yeah, I agree shield bash makes more sense then the kick ever did.

I should be able to kill horses with my bare hands.

Their still alive models, plus rider, should be switched to a throwing weapon type so that I can pick up enemy cavalry and throw them at people.

Based on some of these serious requests I also expect a flying guillotine and the ability to do chi blasts when the katana or bo staff is equipped.  If your meditation skill is high enough you can one-inch-punch plate wearers to death in one hit if you get the timing right.  But only if you assume the praying mantis fighting stance with under 10.0 total armor weight.

Actually, if you swing your weapon right you can already do ki blasts.

well they certainly do not fight like the martial arts people see nowadays

on one side of the spectrum Hollywood and the likes have warped martial arts into  unrealistic nonsense that people think fighting
was(watch any movie dipicting martial arts or wars of melee)

and on the other side certain techniques have been out of favor not taught/or completely forgotten due to sports fighting nowadays

making them illegal moves which change the style itself(making it less lethal and less "dirty")

im taking this post as being "serous" so please show me examples of what type of martial art "fighting" you want and if you use

something that is NOT watered down by hollywood and would be very interesting but if its the former i will forget about this thread

id do it myself but i actually want to PLAY crpg lol back to couching(maybe ill look around later though)

thank you for your time in advance (try to find European stuff too btw like i said eastern martial arts have been messed with a lot and due to the fact most western martial arts have been forgotten they is more intact information when you do find it)

Makes you think though. A martial arts fighting sim, as opposed to the traditional arcade fighters, would be pretty damn boss. Done in a Warband style of way even, except it's hand to hand combat. Different controls for each limb, and combinations of buttons and directions getting to more complex moves. But all in a third person from the back view. I'd dig it.
