Title: Secondary Mode
Post by: Tomas on January 06, 2012, 03:58:23 pm
Two questions rather than a suggestion.  Sorry if it in the wrong place.

1) How does switching to secondary modes effect item stats?

Is it a set penalty for all items used in secondary mode? Or a set stat change based on what modes you are switching from and to (i.e. 2H -> 1H is different to 1H -> 2H)?  Or is it based on individual items which each item having set secondary mode stats unique to that item?

2) Does using a spear with a shield count as the spear being used in secondary mode or have some other such penalties?

It's the wrong place. Try Beginner's Help next time.

1) It depends on the item. In most cases there are three categories:

- (European) two handed swords in halfsword mode: Polearm animations, Polearm wpf used, more stab damage, less swing damage
- Some one handed weapons (Cudgel, Langes Messer, Military Sickle, Fighting Axe - I might miss some) in 2h mode. They use 2h wpf and 2h animations. Minor damage boost too.
- Pretty much all the rest (most of them polearms and 1h) get the weapon turned around with some speed adjustment and damage type change. The direction of speed adjustment seems to depend on the weapon and the other damage type in general seems lower than the original (though in case of cutting weapons going to pierce/blunt it's very much warranted too)

2) This is a separate case. All weapons that normally use two hands but can be used with a shield (ie spears, bastard swords, morningstar, mace) get a -30% penalty to damage and speed or something like that and I believe the weapons that used to be 2h now use 1h profiency, but the weapons that used polearm profiency keep using polearm profiency. I might be wrong though. It's technically a secondary mode even if you can't swap to it by pressing X, but the stats for those modes aren't visible unlike for the modes shown in 1).

Ok then - next question :D

Is the damage boost from going 1H -> 2H, the reverse of the 30% (ish) penalty from going 2H -> 1H.  E.g. a 43% (ish) boost.

No. You can see it in the item stats in game. Here are examples from what I have in my inventory:

Langes messer in 1h: Swing 32c, stab 23p.
Langes messer in 2h: Swing 34c, stab 25p.
Fighting axe in 1h: Swing 32c
Fighting axe in 2h: Swing 36c
Military sickle in 1h: Swing 26p
Military sickle in 2h: Swing 28p

Cudgel I don't own, but I know it's pretty crap in both modes.

Cudgel is OP :). Also, the sickle does pierce damage.

Oh yeah, obviously it does. Thanks for correcting, I didn't really pay attention to it while writing.
