Hey . For my next build I was thinking going horse lancer.
I would like other opinions on which horses and armour are best, and should I use a shield?
Kind regards, DA_tank

Courser/Destrier
all armors Lamellar Vest to Heavy Kuyak(except strange armor)
if you will use shield make 5 atl 4 if 3 shield with 18/18
without shield make 6 atl 5 if

He asked for Horse.. not Athletics.
This is my build on a champion courser:
15/21
3IF
5PS
6Shield
7 Riding
7 WM
You actually can go 15/24 without a shield or 18/21 too.

lamellar vest & kuyaks are NOT good choices for cav. Foot armor is important because you'll be hit in the feet far more often than infantry
-
sweet . But is it worth to have a shield as cav, or just but it into power strike or something?

of course. if you position yourself correctly, you can easily block incoming lancers and even couches. not to mention often absorb 1-3 hits after your horse gets reared and you are making your get away

Also don't forget about archers. Without shield you're a primary target though they'll hit your horse most of the time first.

so why is that my diggled friend?

Also having shield vastly increases your chances of surviving once you get dehorsed, if you dont immediately get raped by pirahna inf and ranged. It also means the only backup weapon you can have is a 1h however, meaning you have to split your wpf between Polearms and 1h.
The build I use is more a 1H/polearm cav/inf hybrid than pure cav, but its the one ive been using ever since the slot change and then the horse req change ( for arabian horse, which I still personally think is the best overall horse for lancing).
15/21 at lvl 30
5 PS
4 Shield
6 Athletics
7 Riding
7 WM
100 1h wpf
145 pole wpf

Yeah, awesome weapons. If you wanna be totally gimped on foot, you can also go with those. Again it's preference, but I'd much rather be running around with a arab cav sword and a shield than a frigging peasant weapon when i get dehorsed.

Oh yeh the final build at 31 is 16-21, at lvl 30 theres just 6 atheltics instead of 7. Also the wpf is prob a bit off, I think 144 or 143 pole wpf instead of 145 but meh, not much diff.
-
I've seen plenty of good players get their arses whooped by quarterstaffs its not that bad a weapon.
-
I agree with Oberyn on weapons. The extra 10 wpf in pole doesnt do much (at least didnt back when I used lance) and a 100 wpf shield + sword combo is quite decent in a wide range of melee circumstances, and most certainly better then either of those poelarms when outnumberd (and you are often outnumbered after being dehorsed)
To also be constructive, my build for 1H Cav/inf hybrid, pretty similar to Oberyns
(lvl30)
15 STR
21 AGI
5 PS
5 Shield
7 Athl
7 Riding
5 WM
~145 wpf in 1h
- as i only use 1 weapon type, got +1 to shield skill and +1 to athletics for better footwork (mainly for strategus and being dismounted)
- used arab horse before, now enjoying destrier. Arab is more powerfull, Destrier is more defensive (survives longer), pick what suits you
- arab cav sword for max cav power, nordic champ for balanced, anything works though (main stats: range, cut dmg)
-
My current build (Level 29):
18/18
3 IF
6 PS
5 Shield
6 ATH
6 Riding
0 WM
100 polearm
50 1 hand
I am a bit unsure if I should stick the 3 WPF from level 30 into IF or WM.
Are 20 more WPF in polearm that much difference?
-
so why is that my diggled friend?
Because they have very low leg armor for their weight.
Compare Kuyak's 10 leg armor to Surcoat over mail with 18.

Too late

Level 30 :
21/15
2 Skill Points converted to 1 Attribute Point
6 IF (68 hp)
7 PS
4 Shield (Heavy Kite has good coverage/4 skill Knightly shields are fast)
3 Athletics
5 Riding (the bonus for ride over requirement is negligible at most, requirement for horse of choice is all you need)
4 WM
104 Polearm wpf
105 1-handed wpf
Armor : Mail shirt is good for stopping a couple of non-bodkin arrows, use whatever you like though. Splinted Greaves with Spurs (you see any other foot gear with spurs? :) ) Helmet of choice.
Weapons : Heavy Lance is for newbies, it's good to start with if you have no idea what you are doing. Light Lance is for professionals only. Personally, I like regular Lance (I'm an experienced Cavalryman that is NOT very good at being a Cavalryman :D ). 1 hander of choice (at least 80 length, though I've had good results with Iberian Mace). Shield of choice.
Rambo cavalry is often dead cavalry, it's always good to ride in formation. See ya on the battlefield, we'll laugh at the walking peasants some time!

When picking a cav build, you'll want to consider whether you're going to go balls-to-the-walls pure cav, or have a variety of skills, with a pure cav build being one without any athletics.
My current build--still a work in progress--will be 18/21.
6 PS
5 Shield
7 Riding
5 WM
146 polearm wpf.
My reasoning:
After many months of playing lancer cav, I've decided that I'm so fucking amazing at it that I might as well put all my points towards making me an even more lethal lancer. Fuck 1h wpf, I fight with a lance. Fuck athletics, I fight on horseback.
If I'm dismounted, I'll probably just die. The 5 shield skill may, however, allow me to hoplite it up. That 146 wpf and 6 PS will allow for, at the least, some decent polearm fighting.

yeah you are right, they aint optimal. still have found memories of using the lam vest witout shield, 15 str and no if for many generations. i still like it probably cause of that..
