Ok My main Character (Ninja_Korgoth). I've had since the last Char wipe (Yonks ago). So on him I've got quite alot of XP and Gold already. I stopped playing cRPG for ages and I only started again a few weeks ago and was happy to find that there was no Char wipe since I last played. So with all this gold and me being a Ninja I've never had to worry about this new upkeep which wasn't around when I was last palying.
Anyways let me get on topic. I made a new Alt, Imperial_Guard_Korgoth so I can kill some guys with Tai Feng :D. And Now I have noticed how insane this upkeep is!! If I dont win I will jsut lose money all the time... My equipment isn't even good at the moment (Leather Jerkin, Nomad Boots. The Vaegir Look). And unless I'm winning I will just slowly lose money, It's jsut insane... I just think the upkeep needs to be a little less harsh.

I agree. I can't even use half my gear anymore due to insane price costs. Don't hate on my opinion here. You all know that the majority doesn't like upkeep. I would like for some people to be able to use their better weapons and armor. Throwing is a problem I admit because I fling my axes at a bunch of unarmored peasants running around trying to 2handslash me. I'd much rather have it if they were happy and had their armor, be much more of a challenge that way.
-
i dont agree, ive played whole day with 100k gear and ive earned 3k
-
Upkeep was already significantly lowered. Remember when upkeep was 20% of base cost of an item for the losing team?
Using anything over 20k worth of gear used to be tantamount to financial ruin. I used 30k worth of gear and promptly lost that much in a few hours.
Now, you can easily break even with roughly 30-35k worth of gear without much luck involved. Even 40k worth of gear is technically sustainable.
-
Upkeep is actually too low.
As you said, you started a new character. Play a bit with very cheap gear and when you get some gold reserves you'll be surprised to see how much equipment you can actually use.
I mean, you were using a *horse* a bit too.. which is not a problem in itself, but without gold reserves upkeep hits you once and you think it's huge, whereas if you played whole day you would break even.
-
Oh Mighty Tai Feng. Your Words of Wisdom :P
-
lol come on :)
-
You need a bit of gold buffer. When you're above a certain pricetag, when you have a x1 match spree, you start losing money. But - when you have a winning spree, you get more.
With a few days of playing, I find that heavy crossbow, 1x steel bolts, mail with surcoat, spiked helm, mail chausses, mail mittens, glaive - totalling circa 30K - is not only upkeepable but makes money. I think I could easily afford circa 5K more gear and break even. All in all, I think 35K is a reasonable amount.
Of course, people like Tai who occasionally play as peasants get to upkeep more when they're not playing lolstab peasant role ;)
-
I think it's fine. My viking can hurt a little if I wear my most expensive stuff, but that's the point.
Everybody was Tei Feng fightiiin'!
Tai Feng is fast as lightning!
He's a little bit frightening!
etc..

I aim for 30k on all my characters and make money on all of them. Just do like bruce said and keep a bit of a gold buffer to compensate for the occasional losing streak.

Different playstyles is a good way to economize. There is really no need to use same equipment all the time - and it's a bit boring as well.
I warmly suggest to people having trouble with upkeep to explore other playstyles. You'll be surprised how fun a faster, more mobile character can be. And when you switch to your main equipment, you will end up with tons of gold. Cheaper, weaker armor is not as forgiving as, say, plate. But it will teach you how to be more aware of your surroundings, how to be more cautious, it will make you focused. And also, some tricks with weapons you can only pull out in low-weight clothes.
In short, go pure polearm proficiency in your next gen, grab Military Fork and peasant clothes - and join the ranks of kung-fu Chinese peasants! :)
By the time you reach next gen you will be swimming in gold, and don't fool yourselves (fool others) - that Military Fork with high polearm proficiency is a killer. Turn into your swing (thrust). If you hit, your enemy is stunned. Now turn (thrust) again. Now he's dead. Congratulations, your kung fu was stronger.
-
Wow... Kung fu's pretty epic but.. I'll downward block you with my axe and fling it in ur skull.. My axe is stronger then your kung-fu

Don't underestimate Military Fork. Your axe would be a weaker weapon in that duel. The rest is up to the skill of the combatants.

With 28k gear you will gain gold every map, slowly but surely.
-
Wow.. Cool

You're right on one thing -- I'm abysmal in melee with throwing axes (unless I have a shield). Of course theres always the fact that I have 123 wpf in throwing, carry twelve throwing axes (each one of them flying insta-death), 9, soon 10 power throw, and 30 strength. I also carry a longsword with 370 hours of using it + 2hand before retirement. All these things you have to know before you fight your enemy. Ignorance kills..............
I would never underestimate an enemy. Instead fighting at the highest skill level so there aren't any surprises afterward.

Wow.. Cool
It's enough to have a "low" tier steppe horse, and the most expensive bow (For HA) and arrows x2, lamellar armor and helmet with kherg boots and leather gloves. Being that the horse is the most expensive thing I own.
Tunic over mail substitutes the lamellar for knights just fine. 3k.
Strong bow + 2 bodkins = around 6-8k?. It's enough for a decent weapon +2k shield.
Mail gloves, mail boots 2-2.5k.
A 1.5k helmet.
You'd still be making lots of money in mail. Mail is good(enough).
(Also, hey Tetris, Loz here. *waves like a retard*)

My "heavy gear" character can use about 70,000 gold worth of equipment all the time without losing money, I don't think there's any need to increase that.

Well John, that's because the team you're on tends to win more often than not.

Raise it please. My default gear is mail hauberk, mail chausses, mail mittens, guard helmet and 4x MW pike. I make money continously. I have 320k saved up and I recently bought 80k's worth of junk I never use. I could retire and get me a black armor set and plated charger and turn gay for all I care
-
Im gonna answer your topic question.
No.

Well, when the damn pike costs less then a military fork or warspear... heh. You can upkeep your entire set (well, with 1x pike) for the price of a heavy crossbow without bolts.
Btw, heirlooming weapons doesn't increase upkeep.
-
Answer: No. We should raise upkeep a bit in fact :!:

The current upkeep system seems perfect to me, you can still wear heavy armor from time to time and you can do very well in medium armor because most people wear low-medium armor too. Tincans are rare as they should be, of course there are people like the MAGANDA3 dude who like to farm 2 days in peasant gear for 2-3 hours of black armor+plated charger, but that's their choice. The only problem is throwing, after patch all other ranged was nerfed to make it balanced against medium armor, I don't understand why throwing doesn't get nerfed too.
-
It is a little too high. Medium armor means you lose money, while you should keep even. Of course characters that alternate peasant outfits to armored ones think it's ok. But not everyone should be forced to play that way. Also the other guy saying upkeep is ok with 100k equip, is someone farming constantly at x5 pubstomping with his clan. But if you play with regular equipment and don't farm with your clan on your clan server with banner balance always on, it's too expensive to play with normal equipment.

I have 32.6k worth of equipment and I always end up with more money than I started with at the end of the day.
-
Depending on my chars I have anywhere from 10k to 35k worth of stuff at ALL TIME and I always get a profit, you're just doing it wrong.
-
I wear leather armor with x3+ all the time and still lose money, and I use darts :L

Im a hybrid thrower/2h with 5 PT i cant even 1hit naked guys with heavy axes or throwing spears i think its decent and shouldn't be nerfed. Before i tried my current build i hated throwing too but now its fun to throw from time to time
