Title: the donkey needs an assistant!
Post by: chadz on February 01, 2011, 11:07:19 pm
so, while developing, I find myself often doing stuff that anyone can do - but I don't have anyone :P

That's stuff like editing long lists with more or less the same stuff, doing some research, doing more lists, doing some raw balancing, etc.

Now I have no idea if anyone is actually interested in doing this, I'm not saying it's boring stuff, not at all, but it might be repetitive from time to time :)

So if you think this might be something for you, this is what you should have:

- a bit of freetime at your hands, otherwise that won't really make sense - because I have more than enough of no freetime myself :P
- common sense, oh please, common sense!
- basic PC knowledge - if you had trouble installing the mod, this might not your position in the dev team :)
- I must like and trust you, because I can only work with people I like and trust
- You should be interested in learning some new stuff
- any kind of modding experience does help, but I'm perfectly fine if that isn't the case

So why should you do this?
- you will be part of the greatest mod dev team, EVER!
- you can really really REALLY speed up the development of the patch.
- you get to test the newest versions before all the others!
- it will be fun, I promise :P

reply here or by pm

edit: also, it wouldn't hurt if you would be VERY interested in keeping the community informed about stuff *cough*patchnotes*cough*

I'd love to help. I have more than enough free time, and I want to give back to the cRPG community. If there's anything else you need just let me know :D

I can lend a hand in item balancing and testing stuff if needed. The other stuff is alright, but I feel like this might be the strong point for me. And no, I have no modding experience at all. I dug out modifiers from the itemlist for masterwork weapons if that counts :D

Also, you must be capable of making some damn fine coffee. That's the most important job of an assistant, after all. Or so I hear.

just so there is no misunderstanding - with raw balance I meant some strategus gamebalance stuff, not the crpg item stats, those are in good hands already :)

Is there a template you'd like people applying to fill out? Like a resume of sorts?

your question disqualifies you for the common sense part but the rest is what would be good to know about you to be considered as a candidate

I like Strategus, and would love helping it evolve faster. Got some basic coding expierience and can paint beautiful uml diagrams. Also, I stopped sleeping a while ago.

I have a 4 day weekend every week and an obsession with the mod that rivals that of crackhead prostitutes.

If there is anything you need tested out I'd be happy to donate some time to the efforts

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I spent all of last year beta testing League of Legends and Heroes of Newerth during the closed beta stages... so I've got a decent amount of experience in playing with odds and ends of game mechanics to track down problems and report them

-Free time will be deducted from Banner pack time.
-The mod simply is not installed.
-Backstabbing snake.
-New stuff?
-Non as mentioned above.

Is that fine?

Now seriously, with what do you need help? Coding, graphic related stuff, organizing crap, the to-do list?

I probably could give a hand or two to most of that, not so much the first one.

Aww crap!

If you want me anyway, I would like to apply as some kind of freelancer.

Downsides:

- No idea of programming at all. I managed to install the mod without problems, but... well... let me say it this way: I still use the Internet Explorer. Everything which can be assumed about this fact is true, concerning me
- I work from 14:45 to 23:30, go to bed at 04:00 and wake up at about 12:00 (my sleep is holy to me). It's MET (I'm German). So could be I am online at very weird times, but concerning the time shift it could also be an advantage  :?
- Only mediocre English skills (learned it at school)
- I am a fucking asshole. Bruce can confirm.

Advantages:

- I think a lot about balancing (not only for Warband), and it's great fun for me to work out balancings or gameplay systems/concepts.
- I am ... not unintelligent...
- I fucking LOVE writing "official" stuff, from tutorials over changelogs to dev blogs. I love to share my thoughts (which can also be used for sharing your thoughts) about everything, and I am never too lazy to reason anything as objectively as possible.

An experienced software developer applying to lend a hand in just about any chore your overwhelmingly enlightened mind thinks of!
I do have a regular job as a software developer but I still have some free time on hand and would love for some extra experience working for a modding team (although my modding experiences are quite minor I am indeed a fast learner!) - what you guys do for free - I realize how much work it is and I give you all my respect.

My ups:
- advanced computer knowledge
- advanced programming knowledge (C, C#, Java, Python, Delphi, Visal Basic, HTML, SQL)
- normal database management skills
- all of the above brags matter not as I am prepared to take on any assignment
- my love for the mod

My downs:
- might not have as much free time as the other nerds(sorry :)) here
- I just gave you another troll point for no apparent reason :(

I'm in CET time zone btw.

@ joker, the timeshift from Germany to Austria should not be that crucial.  :D

I would be glad to help, but my freetime is from about 9-11pm and not every day. Next week and from time to time i'll take me some more time, though. So if you have some simple things to do, contact me. No modding or coding abilities here, but otherwise I'm alright, I think?

Hmm, looks someone was faster

Well, im also a fulltime software developer, without proper modding knowledge except some mapmaking for goldies like DOOM or DN3d.
My coding knowledge is mostly selftaught so im confident that i can fulfill the requirements to support the mod and help to make it even better than it already is.
I also understand the most important programming credo: you can take as much time as you want as long as it finishes on schedule :D

Pro:
- programming knowledge: .net (C#, VB, ASP), Java (JSF), Python, VB 6.0, PL/SQL T/SQL
- very good database management skills
- i hate wookie, not really but he is so hairy

Con:
- i love trolling (or is it a pro?)
- same time issue

CET aswell

I'd like to offer myself to help with the mod.
I have alot of free time atm, i have good adequate IT skills, no proper programming though ( i did Qbasic @ school many moons ago though). I used to play a low key mmo game called Minions of Mirth which i was part of the community development team, i modeled and submitted a scythe weapon, i used milkshape and UVmap skins for it. I started animating models for that game, scripted animations for run, walk ,swim, attack die etc..  but the owner sold it off and went to work for garage games and we kinda lost interest.

What? Was zum Henker? Dann chadz deutsch?

- Advantage: we speak the same mother language?

Well, but somehow it was clear. All great persons in history were Austrians

@my rivals ( :mrgreen: ):

Always start with your downs, never with your ups! On one hand it creates the impression of being honest ("Hey, this guy doesn't pretend to be perfect"), on the other hand your application ends with your ups, so they will stay better in mind, after they (hopefully) made up your downs already.

This is a general rule. Always the negative things first, then the positive. Exception: critics. First you have to find something to praise, then criticize. Otherwise some people get the impression you were biased somehow, and more or less ignore you. Saying both good and bad things makes you look like someone neutral.

Well to be honest, serious job applications should never start with what you suck at :D But thanks for the advice. Also "rivals" could be a bit misleading as we're not really competing (this isn't exactly a payed job). Or are we? :)

No, at a real job application you DO NOT HAVE downsides. It's that easy

Was just meant for everything else. Though trying to be honest in an application could also lead to success ("I am a lazy bastard, but when I love doing things I do them fucking well. And I LOVE the job you offer!"  )

@rivals: well, the topic name is "the donkey needs an assistant", not "the donkey needs assistance"  :P

Wow.. so many applicants..

Well, we have picked Leiknir, due to his outstanding wits and charme. And because he has proven great ambition regarding strategus. And he can do ULF diagrams.

However, the choice was really hard. I know, usually that's just a phrase, but in this thread / in my inbox were many many MANY other people that would have been just as good, probably.

Therefore, we are looking for another one. The application round is closed, though, because we already have spot a few very interesting individuals we'd also like to have aboard. Therefore, we'll discuss the matter for some time, and then come back to you with possibly another member.

So stay tuned!

(btw, I was really surprised by the amount, makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside)
