So im going 1h with sexy shield for the next couple of gens and while im getting used to it im going to shamelessly get you to talk about stuff to aid me :D
Im just curious who 1h players consider top class 1h players and what kind of weapons and shields 1hders like to use :P
annnnd what kind of 1h players/weapons/shields 2h/pole etc hate to fight :D all in all im a curious kinda guy (not in a gay way sorry to dissapoint reyiz) :D

On NA Dan_CHEATS is definitely one of the best 1H + Shield players I've ever seen.
I play one as well, and I use the Long Arming Sword and the Huscarl's Round Shield.
A strategy I like to use: Wait for them to hit your shield then do a quick retaliation (May be common knowledge but w.e)
I'm by no means good, but I'm getting better :) Good luck!

Huscarl and Nordic War Sword.

Board Shield and Cleaver/Pick. ARE YOU MAN ENOUGH TO BE A RHODOK?

best 1h is and will always be DimUrban, just remember his epic scores on the old strategus.
we were even ordered to avoid him unless we could gangbang him

It's hard to think of "good one handers" in terms of players. It's hard to stand out as a one-hander because your job is generally "holding people off". Nobody holds off multiple attackers like an agility shielder. It's usually the two-handers hogging the top of the kill charts.
I do recommend Dan_Cheats though. Not sure what his build is but it must be 18/18 if not 15/21, with full wpf into 1-handed.
There's a couple other people who use the elite scimitar ("spamitar") that are good but I can't think of their names off the top of my head.
Standard shielder maneuvers:
* Let them hit your shield, then strike with a left swing (backhand) while stepping to the right side of them (your right). This helps your swing land faster.
* Let them hit your shield, then draw back your backhand swing, hold for half a second, then release. This can cause people to parry, but then they detect the delay and go for a hit, which is right when your blow lands. Don't do this too often though -- if they think you're going to do this, they can just attack you twice in a row and they'll hit while you're holding.
* Kick them, then slash them. Generally this is used against other shielders, to make them lose their block. You need a fast weapon and high wpf in order to land your hit before they recover, but it's fairly common to see.
Don't neglect athletics for 1H. Many 2H players go with 0 athletics because when your weapon reach is that long, you don't really need to face-hug people. Most 1H weapons are short though so you really need to be able to get in their face -- a backhand with a warhammer, for example, requires you to be right up on them. I suggest a minimum of 4 athletics. 6 is a lot better.
-
As long as you can tell if a person hesitated long enough after a block, you can use left swing to slash at them again if spaced correctly.
I recommend going STR-oriented: 12-15 agi, rest strength. Tin can shielder is really good imo. Many 1h swords are too weak without the necessary strength.
Use anything in the second half of 1hands.
Italian,Espada,Nordic, or even the shorter ones too now that it's easier to hit teammates (I use steel pick).
Shields: You definitely want the shield speed in order to have adequate offense. The heater shields such as the knightly heater are good. If blocking ranged is your priority, go ahead and try heavy round or even huscarl. They aren't much worse with speed, but you will definitely end up feeling twitch block not as responsive.
If you have extra weapon slots, USE THEM. You can have a second hand axe to deal with other shielders, or something like an awlpike or boar spear to deal with cavalry (even with 1 wpf). 1 slot weapons give you a lot to manage.

Why?
101 speed, 32 cut unloomed. 102 speed, 35 cut masterwork. It's a bit short, but still substantially longer than the can openers (88 reach).

Seems like a worse elite scimitar to me, mostly.
-
Balbaroth is pretty legit with his spammitar.
As for tips using a 1h plus shield, abuse the fact that upper swing and left swings are very similair in their swing appraoch, feint them very often, and you will get many headhits.
-
I always went 18/18 when I went 1h and used a Military Sickle(Opposed to the military pick, mostly because of the extra length.) with either a Heavy Kite Shield or a Board Shield half the time, and a Huscarl shield if I was going to be working more with my fellow clanmates.
I also used the Broad Short Sword quite a bit, because it's fairly fast, and easy to feint with. It was always fun to feint a head hit and then just blindside them to the left.
Make sure to hit the duel server to keep your blocking skills from getting rusted up occasionally. When I transfered back to Polearm, I had issues blocking at first because I just haven't done it in forever. Not to mention that 1h/no shield is actually pretty damn viable if you're an agility build just due to the amount of swings you can get off in such a short time.

Actually 88 length is ideal for a 1h'er...not too long, not too short. Longer weapons have issues with swing speeds and getting stuck in walls.

21/15 with throwing weapons, elite cav shield and iberian mace/grosse messer. 8-)

Use a sword with this build. Not a short pick. Hits like a truck and doesnt die for anything with monster IF values. Use some thin with over 100 reach.(long espada, knightly arming, nord champ, scimi etc)
Cool trick for 1h. Stab to the right of the opponent and deliberately miss. Then attack again with a right swing to the face while moving on the left side. It take practise to get it perfect, but once you do, it catches alot of top lvl players off guard.
But by far the best trick is the most common one. Spam left swing and move on the right side.
Oh and if you can spin like I can, 1h lolspins are the shit.
Hope Ive been helpful.

I think the Nieuweido was by far the best weapon I've used as a shielder
I agree, well i dont have that much experience as a shielder, only played it for a gen and a half but i found Niuweidaos lengh to be just right for my taste, and its lightning fast aslo with a decent cut. Nowdays with id go for a pierce/blunt weapon.
-
Nordic champion is the best sword, for shield huscarl or heavy round shield if you need some open slots.
-
lvl 31:
24/15
Iron Flesh 3
Power Strike 8
Shield 5
Athletics 5
Riding 0
Horse Archery 0
Power Draw 0
Power Throw 0
Weapon Master 5
I don't play a lot and I loomed my steel pick twice when I had lower strength, so I mostly used my steel pick with huscarl or heavy round shield. The problem is that you get outreached very easily and I experimented with a lot of different weapons. I can recommend the military sickle for good reach, speed and pierce damage.
I have to say that if you want to have fun you should aim for high agility IMHO.
-
Well, I am 1h+shield/cav, but I will share my build anyway.
21 Str
15 Agi
130 One Handed ( give or take a point, I forgot lol )
4 IF
7 PS
5 Shield
5 Ath
5 Riding
3 WM
I often play as just Infantry too and get good scores, not always, but no ones perfect. I use either a pick, iberian mace or my loomed Arabian cavalry sword.
When going against people on foot who use picks and maces, if I have my cavalry sword I use my range advantage pretty well, if you can keep them at the max of your swords range, which takes some practice, you can trick alot of players, by swinging and hitting their shield, but stepping back and swinging again with an overhead.
It's uncountable how many times I have done that and an enemy has counter attacked, but their weapon was too short to hit me and my sword was still long enough to hit them, thus they miss and I hit them. Also, the swords range combined with good footwork can allow you to break the chain of the whole "hit defend hit defend" pretty easily.
I'd say buy alot of weapons and see what you prefer most and how well you use them, but IMO you can't go wrong with a pick or a mace, they hurt and are perfect hugging weapons, especially for tight hallways and enclosed places and they have a nice easy swing feel to them due to being short.
-
renegat is a really good 1h shielder and dfficult to play against because of his feint spam, so if you feint alot and use a weapon that is hard to follow like the steel pick then you can do really well. That is more of a dueling way to go though.
-
Long Espada!
-
this gen (as i respeced to lvl 26) im going 18-18 6if 6ps 6 shield 5 ath 6wpm. i have lordly body armour gloves and helmet so 6 if should be fine :P I might drop some agi next gen.
Trying out the warhammer atm with Heavy kite shield. its nice to rape high armour with but i bring a cheap 1h axe or 1h sword to deal with shields/lightly armoured foes :P (and ofc i switch to the sword when my shield breaks for the length) Arabian strait sword seems like a cheap backup

id do 5 shield and 6 ath instead

Exactly 100% my build last gen, perfectly described,
ideal choice of weapons on top.
This is THE mobshielder build....but can still be played perfectly fine in any other situation.

Only thing is, I don't see any point in going 21 15 over 21 18 unless you're going to get riding.
-
1hander is for noobs thats why xant is a 1hander.
i' am a dual wielder+shield (i leave you to guess how that i possible but i give you a clue.. i am italian. and no i not have 3 legs)
You don't know the power of the steel shield.
tell him bro!
-
only thing i hate about modshielding is the ammount of retards who stab me in the back with swords and pikes :P
-
I think one of the best shielders is Grok.
My advice, take at least 7 PS. Athletics depends on the weapons you want to use. I prefer short hard-hitting weapons. With only 5 athletics, a shield, and some determination, people kiting you is not a problem. More ath is better though.
Shields, I take the fastest ones. The knightly/elite cav line is nice.

MW Espada Eslavona! 33 pierce for the lulz. No seriously, it kinda looks like a butter knife, but the thrust is devastating. :D Who needs cut damage anyway?
-
I used the Espada and a lot of the other weapons in this thread and its important to remember as a 1h fighter that you need a well rounded balanced weapon to be effected.
Shield selection is also important, the Husc might be great for lasting a long time and a large protection area but its quite slow, I have a +3 Knightly Heater shield that can take a bloody beating and is nearly insta block at shield 6.
IMHO after using a MW Long Espada for a months I got sick of the swing not interrupting, since if you always spam stab its very easy to block. Other weapons that lack a stab become too predictable to be effective against the really good 2h players out there.
Swords offer the best overall balance, if you want speed and damage, go with a One Handed Battle Axe (Offers best range and speed with decent damage) otherwise go with something like Knightly Arming sword, Italian Sword, and Langes Messer. If you really want to be cool use the Arabian Cavalry Sword (33 Swing 105 Length!!!!) but its slow (96) and the stab is laughable on it.
Hope my advice helps.

Espada Eslavona is very fun weapon to use indeed. Considerably faster and longer than a pick or a hammer and has a thrust on top of it all.

The funny thing is when you run around in light armor or peasant gear and someones approaching you like "oh look there, easy kill with baby weapon" and you just do a fast stab to their face and kill them with one hit.

You can do the same with a long espada to cav xD stab them in the foot while they ride by and see the guy fall off his horse! :D

Balbaroth's the best 1h/shielder I've ever seen. Just sayin'.
Many moons ago I too was a 1h/shielder, and I dare say I did rather well. My suggestions regarding equipment:
1. Don't weigh yourself down with tons of armor--you have a shield. Agility is your best friend, particularly when you're facing large groups of enemies. I've always gotten a rush from fighting 3+ people, weaving in and out of them like a ninja, rushing the people in the back unexpectedly.
2. Pick a good shield, and loom the fuck out of it. I suggest the brown lion heater shield. I used it, and it worked well. I had the pleasure of stealing Balbaroth's loomed one a few times, and I felt like god.
3. Use a variety of 1h weapons--be versatile. I've still got a small armory worth of 1h weapons to choose from in-game, which allows me to adapt to the situation on a round-by-round basis. For example, if I notice the other team's top players are shielders, I'll grab an axe and go a-hunting!
-If you have the cash, carry two weapons. I'd suggest carrying your favorite sword/primary weapon, and a mid-tier axe in reserve for shield busting. Or, switch the secondary axe out for a bamboo spear for anti-cav work.
Oh, and I very much suggest that when you are fighting you do so like a boss. You need to constantly be moving, and when you move, it must be a) unexpected and b) with determination (don't pussy foot about, pick a direction and GO). When you attack, don't spam a single direction--attack from every angle, particularly the unexpected overhead or thrust. Fight as a member of a team, and do so effectively. A shield wall, however fun, isn't always effective. Holding off 5 enemy 2h/polearm bundle of stickss who are trying to flank your team is. Helping out a teammate who's getting swamped by enemy melee and cavalry is. Distracting the other team's archers by attacking them is (you may not kill them, but they'll have to kite you and run like bundle of stickss, and they can't shoot your team when they're doing that). When facing cavalry, be awesome and sidestep as they charge toward you, simultaneously overhead slashing the horse's face.
tl;dr: NERF CAV.

I do alright with a MW Italian, x2 Brown Heater, and vanilla body amour totaling 29 points. 1h+Shield can be a very diverse class if one is willing to take the time to learn.

There's a ton of tips on this topic in the beginners section allready.
Anyway, pretty much everything has been mentioned.
The most important thing you have to do is determine the "type" of shielder you want to be.
Heavy shielder (High strength/IF, hard hitting and a bit more armour)
light shielder (Agility build, hits like a pussy with anything but the can openers)
1h/cav (balanced build would be best for that imo)
...
I'm currently using the 21/15 build and only in duels with great swords and long polearms I really have to watch the range (using a knightly arming sword) or I risk getting outranged. It's a bit harder to face hug, you need to get used to your somewhat limited mobility.
This build is king in sieges though. Use any weapon you like and with 7 PS you will drop em like flies. Get a one of the hammers/picks and run through groups of enemies spamming left-right slashes and you kill almost all with ~2 hits.
-
Top 1 handers players (EU):
The only shielder I'm having hard time to kill is Muffin because of his insane lolstab hability
Renegat is really good too, deadly feint spammer
Lor and Dahli are good but they use spamitar so...
DimaUrban is not that hard to beat in duel at least but I must agree that he is very good in group fight
Some STR guys are also fucking scary with 1handers
Kinngrimm because his shield never break and if you do 1 mistake you're dead.
My favorite weapon back then was the Niuweidao, fast, good cut damage and not too short, not too long but no trust.
Now I'm using the Nordic Champion's Sword because of it's lenght and decent speed/damage.
-
I'm honestly curious. Why would anyone go for 21/15 over 21/18? 21/15 seems a very popular build, yet it makes pretty much no sense, unless you're a hybrid..
-
to go 21-18 you have to sacrifice too much as a shielder for most people to want to play it.
21-15 would let you have 7if 7ps 5shield 5ath 5wpm 21-18 you could have what 0if 7ps 5shield 6ath 5wpm
To me the gains from getting 1 extra to shield ath or wpm isnt enough to sacrifice all the IF.
unless ofc you going for 3or 4 shield but to me its not worth it.

well most builds are based on lvl 30 :P
-
just play whatever your good with man. these players there talking bout being the best have all the same shit in common, just fast weapons. ive beaten them all as a sheilder and of course i lost to them tooo. if you wanna kill alot go with fast weapons. i love the heavy hitting slow ones tho. thatsn just my style man. so play whatever you think is fun! altho i must say balbaroath has great footwork as well
-
ive been running around with a warhammer and doing pretty well on eu1 :D my warhammer loves leshma ^^ but now i also love the long espada. i think i need to earn some gold and use both ;D

21/15, normal 7IF build. Played 9 gens with it so far. Whoever claims IF is wasted on a shielder has never been hit by steel or missiles from "helpful" teammates.
Sarranid cavalry sword. 105 weapon reach plus the +19 (or whatever) for the right to left lets you outreach most players, either because they swing too late or simply because your range IS superior.
All comes down to what you like. Low agility is far from ideal for 1on1 situations, but when you can one- or two-hit four people in a mob, while blocking three strikes at once, it's fun.
-
This gen im 18-18 and playing around with warhammer and long espada. think ill def go 21-15 next gen
-
I like 21/15 build or even 24/12 build, I find 4 athletics is usually enough if you don't let yourself fall into someone's backpeddle trap.
I think the langes messer is an underrated 1h. 33 cut swings (MW 36) 98 speed (99) 92 reach, you can do a good bit of hurt with 7 or 8 PS and some speed bonus. Also the weapon looks fantastic.
I might start investing in a military cleaver, MW 38 cut swings is essentially 2H damage.
I might have to consider a 21/18 shield build at some point though... seems interesting.
-
Shield + Warspear. Its funny how many people underestimate it. They just keep swinging, expecting to be faster.
-

I see way more lange messer than war cleavers on the servers. And yes, the stats are good, 23 pierce damage for a cutting weapon is pretty high and 92 lenght is enough to do well with. There's not really a big disadvantage comparing to other swords.
