Okey so I've been with this build: And I might try this:

My previous build gives me more shield points which keeps my shield whole, it also gives me more athletics which keeps me moving pretty well (i have pretty heavy armor so it might be important)
The other build gives me 7 more hitpoints which could be very useful. I'm also gonna retire after hitting 31, then when i stop retiring i'll do 18/18 build and keep goin to 21/18

Primarily 1h with xbow mainly for support on low ranged teams and strat.
Gear consists of some middle range mail, open sallet, polished gaunts and cased greaves. Preferred weapons include Elite scimi, Knobbed mace, and a heavy pick. As for shield, i tend to use different shields for how the server is playing.
Strategy: disperse the archers from whatever camp spot they have chosen for the map, and getting into the fight quickly to delay their first charge (usually by getting behind their lines and causing people to chase me) With this build i tend to kamakaze alot but i can usualy take out 1-2 before going down.

Your poll is messed up, saying 21/18 as an option.
21/15 or 24/12 are my two favorite shielder builds.

I'm voting for the 21/15.
7 if gives much survivabilty even more so than the extra added dam of 24.
Imo, you don't need the wpf, ath and shield skill of 15 agi if you remove shields against axemen and have decent timing.
On the other hand I feel that at 6 ps I give to little damage.

Swiftness is very important as a Shielder, Footwork is a big part of what you need to stay alive.The more athletics you got the better Footwork you are able to do plus 6 Powerstrike is fairly decent already.
Also, 1 Shield skill more means some less damage to the shield which is also important to increase your survivability.I always went fine with 18/18, even without Ironflesh(I put Ironflesh in Riding).

I'm 24/12 at the moment (or headed there -- retired and back up to level 28 now for 22/12...)
I'm going to play it out until the next retirement but I'm pretty sure I'm going 18/18 next time. Biggest problem is that 12 agility just isn't enough for a shielder. 15 is marginal. I think I'd like to have 6 shield skill for a proper "shielder".
My concept for 24/12 was that I could block people well enough until I got some backup and if they turned their back on me, I could give them a solid whack with 8 PS. Basically "support role with punch". 4 shield skill is too brittle though. I could go 24/15 if I dropped throwing and some IF but it's awfully amusing to plant an axe in the back of an archer that's trying to kite me.
I think 18/18 would be a much more balanced build and still leave me points to play around with if I want to pick up a little throwing again. Could do 3 throwing and 3 IF and 6 everywhere else. Or 1 IF and 5 throwing... really don't think dedicated shielders need IF as much as the tin cans, especially if you pick up throwing as well.

I was thinking of going 9-27 next gen, and slay down some archers.
But for melee purpose, 24/15 is the king.

few gens ago I was 21-15 and I liked it a lot better then 24-15. You get a lot more IF in the first build and do not sac much str or damage.

Or actually i could try that, i just put 1 to if and 3 to wm, and you ppl forget that i'm using huscarl's round shield (2slots) so i have no room for polearm =)

I think heavy armor or high IF is important for a shielder. People often say the opposite, stating that the shield is your armor, or you shouldn't get hit a lot of you are shielding well.
I've played sword and board for a couple gens, and I find that I need extra survivability for TEAM HITS! :p I'm serious. As a shielder you are usually up front (or should be) and often face hugging the enemy. Your team will hit your back and sides a lot.
Nothing worse than engaging the enemy with only 1/4 health cuz you got knicked twice by a teamie and were wearing light armor.
Just a thought!

Yup. IF and Heavy Armor are for you friends killing you in the back.
Therefore I also recommend shielders bringing a sidearm of either throwing or polearm to avoid facehugging when clusterfucks, cause teammates will kill you.

Funny. I've been 1h cav / shielder for 12 gens now and although i've tried 21/15, 24/12 and simmilar builds, my conclusion has been that 6 athletics is the sweet spot for a versatile shielder.
So i'm 18/18. Slightly unforgiving when taking hits, yes, but generally it allows you to do well against multiple opponents, chase archers and stuff like that.
It's highly personal though and clearly depends on what style of play you prefer. I can imagine in tight group play that the extra athletics isn't needed.

Wow I can't agree more; I get team wounded a lot when I'm in groups. Fortunately with 24/12 8 ironflesh I'm toting around a healthy 75 hp (half the time with heavy armor, half the time with medium/heavy) and team hits don't do as much as they could.
Almost every time I am in a group and killing someone I'll take 1-2 hits from a friendly before it's all said and done.

Yep, I am currently using this build. Just slightly different wpf (went deep into 1 Handed this gen).
I don't agree with builds that have higher IF than Shield skill. My standard build never had more than 50HP. Never felt like I needed more. I only went with 3 IF this time because it was either that or Riding, and I have no business being on a horse. Of course, I never wear less than 47 body armor.

27/15 works well for me right now, though 18/18 worked quite well for me pre-patches. I've also heard 21/15 is very kind on new players, but I don't have a very large sample size for that claim.

I think 56 hit points isn't just enough
That's the big question for me.
Right now I'm 24 str, 8 IF for 75 hit points.
The really dangerous people -- the ones most likely to kill me -- kill me in about 2 hits, for about half my health each hit. So they're whacking me for around 40 damage through my armor. If I had 0 IF, they'd still kill me in 2 hits. One hit for like 75% of my health and the second hit for dramatic overkill. Or I get lanced by a cav for way more than 75 hp so again the extra IF isn't doing me much good.
It helps a lot with lesser attacks, of course, but it's usually the full STR gorillas that I seem to end up dying to. Rarely do I get plinked to death. I wonder how much use I'm really getting out of IF.

Having low hp doesn't really bother me much as a shielder. Once you get practiced at taking only light hits, and not letting anything touch your shield except your opponent's final strike, then health becomes secondary to how much damage you can do per strike. At least, that's where I'm at in my evolution as a shielder. Eventually I may become a Venusaur.

1 I have played shielder for 4 generations.My opinion is that 21/15 is the best buid
2 why? 7 power strike gives you enough damamge,and 5 shield and 5 athletic is awsome~~!!
3 however 6 power strike is weak in attacking plate armor, and 6 athletic is a waste of skill points (18、18)
