Title: 1H Shield Cavalry Build
Post by: Stickgore on August 30, 2011, 08:08:44 am
Whats a good build for a 1H cav shielder? Can't seem to find a good one. I'd like one with 4 shield so I can use my Elite Cavalry Shield. I want to be able to hit hard, and be able to survive a decent amount of damage. Thanks.

I am no expert so I pulled some builds off of various pages in this forum and modified them for my own preferences.  Since our requirements are similar, I see no reason not to share the information I gathered from various sources in this post.

If you don't want to listen to a newb like me feel free to look through the first couple pages of this forum, there are plenty of other threads talking about different builds and equipment loadouts.  Since you said you could find none that fit your requirements, here are some of my own.

This first build is the one I am using now for my first cav gen to see which role I like best.  I can do 1h/cav, lance/cav, and 1h/shield melee very well.  If you are still not sure what kind of cav you want to be, perhaps you would consider something like this for your first gen.

----------------------------------

Level: 30
Strength: 18
Agility: 18

Ironflesh: 1
Power Strike: 6
Shield: 4
Athletics: 6
Riding: 6
Weapon Master: 6
One Handed: 133
Polearm: 100

----------------------------------

This one is the previous build modified for just 1h/shield/cav.  less weapon master, more ironflesh.

Level: 30
Strength: 18
Agility: 18

Ironflesh: 4
Power Strike: 6
Shield: 4
Athletics: 6
Riding: 6
Weapon Master: 3
One Handed: 131

----------------------------------

This build sacrifices some agi, speed, and maneuverability for more damage.

Level: 30
Strength: 21
Agility: 15

Ironflesh: 5
Power Strike: 7
Shield: 4
Athletics: 5
Riding: 5
Weapon Master: 3
One Handed: 131

----------------------------------

Here is a build i found with even more strength and durability, but my experience with 1h cav so far makes me think this won't be fast or maneuverable enough to deal with other cav.

Level: 30
Strength: 24
Agility: 12

Ironflesh: 6
Power Strike: 8
Shield: 4
Athletics: 4
Riding: 4
Weapon Master: 3
One Handed: 131

----------------------------------

If anyone with more actual riding experience wants to comment on any of these builds or add their own, I would also appreciate the feedback.

if you are new, start off with more riding than needed, it helps tremendously.  As you get better and better, starting slimming down your riding skill to the bare minimum to use the horse

24/15

8ps
5shield
5wm(could exchange some to ath)
5riding

No ath seems horribad at start but you can get used to it, best thing about this is that with a 35+ cut weapon you can onehit just about anyone.

Npz, glad I could help.

Thats the build that I have been leaning towards for my next gen.

Either that or one of these reduced shield builds, probably the second one.

---------------------------

This one is average at movement, but has good damage and lots of HP.

Level: 30
Strength: 21
Agility: 15

Ironflesh: 7
Power Strike: 7
Shield: 2
Athletics: 5
Riding: 5
Weapon Master: 3
One Handed: 131

---------------------------

This one is average at movement, max powerstrike, but sacrifices 11 HP

Level: 30
Strength: 24
Agility: 15

Ironflesh: 0
Power Strike: 8
Shield: 2
Athletics: 5
Riding: 5
Weapon Master: 3
One Handed: 131

------------------------

If my calculation is correct, the difference between these two builds is 11 extra hitpoints vs 8% more damage.

Ironflesh: 0
Power Strike: 9
Shield: 3
Athletics: 3
Riding: 4
Weapon Master: 4
One Handed: 139

basically its a one handed build with riding. with 4 you can ride any non-armored warhorse. i use heavy lance constantly, and i can actually do fairly well without wpf in it, so there you go. knight cav.

I had a question on the same topic, but more about leveling than builds.

Do you just level up and gear for a normal foot shielder, then once you have your final armor, shield, sword.  Save up for horse?

Or do you save up for a horse first and then get your gear.  Im about to start a new toon (first gen) and just curious as the most effective way to gear/level.

First buy a decent footman equipment (your weapon, a ~3k armor and whatever gauntles, boots and helm you want). Then save up for the rouncey and get 3 riding at the same time (don't invest points in riding if you can't spend 3 points in it or don't have the horse already). You can also just save for your final horse without buying a tier 2 horse.

DO NOT do cav your first 2 gens, its expensive and you need enough money to create a buffer.  I think shielder is best way to level as you learn the game.  You act as a decoy and can help your team get kills.  If you're playing siege get small/med/siege ladders + siege shield to help your team win.

If you really wanna save money, use a very cheap weapon and scavenge from the battlefield.  Same can be done with shields abit more dangerously.

Worth to remember. There is no upkeep for siege equipment.

Hmm, I didn't know this. Does that include construction sites too?

I've never had one but I guess so. The siege shields and ladders don't have any at least. Although I haven't used them so much since the latest patch so for all I know they could have implemented it but I doubt it since I haven't seen any "remove upkeep on ladder" threads.

ìf you are new to 1handed cavalry, go 18/18, than in next gens, lower the agi to the riding requirment you need for your horse.

Plated charger is requirement 6...

xD

But seriously, having a warhorse (5 req) but still having 6 riding. Wonderfull. Even better with 7 :D Although then you'll have to gimp your athl or WM or shield or PS and that's not fun :(

How much of a buffer are we talking about?  I had about a 10K buffer before I got my horse.  6 maps later I didn't have enough money for my horse.  So..... Do you need like 100K minimum to play cav.  If so that kinda blows.  Was hoping Cav would be feasible for a casual player.  I only have like 3 hours a week to game, so looks like Cav is out of reach for some people, which is sad to me cause what I liked about this game was the idea to "play the style you want".

You want a buffer of at least 25-30k, which is very low. For cav I would increase that too 40-50k. Some people say it's an overkill, but I say it's worth it. Also if you can manage to use cheaper horses (my "default" is paulfrey which I find really good) effectively then do that for some time and go heavier when you are winning/wanna be an hero. That way you can actually earn money as a cav (or at least I do). Also focus on key target. A couch on the enemies top killer can easily change the battle. Just wait a bit and take them when they are unaware.

Well my next cav build is going to be 1h shield ( currently pole/1h shield cav, so basically dropping the polearms and switching up my stats a bit ) I designed this one to suit my own preferences

21 str
15 agi

4 Ironflesh
7 PS
5 Shield
5 Athletics
5 Riding
3 WM

131 One handed ( give or take a point considering the char planner is not completely accurate sometimes )

I personally like the idea of this build because it leaves me with reasonable speed on both horse and foot, also a fairly decent strength shield.

This is pretty close to the build I'm going to settle with next gen. I dislike having less than 5 riding, as I feel just a bit too slow. 5 riding seems to be about the magic number for me.
