Title: An archery suggestion. Check it out!
Post by: Christo on July 17, 2011, 02:33:35 am
Okay, I made a Longbowman archer alt, thanks to STF, and played it for a few hours.
(Sorry to those 2 fellows who I hit in the head as teammates, it was my first game.)

Of course, I got a bit better after the first round. Sniped a few times.

But there is one thing I don't understand, and it's the archery animation.

Wouldn't it make more sense for an archer, to don't pull his bow while aiming?

I'm going to show an example: The Huntsman bow from Team Fortress 2.

As far as the game is unrealistic and corny, it has the bow mechanics well made.
(If you ignore the arrow drop.)

For those who don't know how it works:

-You nock the arrow.
-You don't pull it until you want, so you can aim freely.
-AFTER that you pull the bow, and shoot quickly, because if you hold back, you won't hit anything.

The point is, I don't understand why Warband cRPG archers try to shoot instantly when they nock their bows,
and I find this as a nice mechanic, for a better archery experience. Why?

-It would solve all the "Why can't I aim for more than a second" problems.
-Running away while shooting would become a lot more complicated, and harder. (Archers getting some respect, maybe?)

What do you think? Discuss!

I believe it's because you can't have 2 seperate animations and stages for firing an arrow with the current engine.

you can't aim for long because you can't hold the bow long enough to aim 3 secs and still be accurate(i'm doing archery myself, so i know how it works). atleast with a warbow you can't because if you want to penetrate armor you have to have a bow with a high poundage.(or you have a compound bow but they didn't have those in the medieval ages )

Why not? Crossbows do it. Also if its something difficult then chadz is the guy to code around it. As he did with the whole cavalry friendly damage from bumbs. That was 'impossible' too.
Also if I could animate / 3D anything I'd do it in an instant. chadz wont even think about it untill someone does that. This is a great suggestion and I and others have suggested this before.

It's been suggested before and I supported it there and I shall support it here, I would love to have this because it would allow for a lot more usefulness when trying to move into a decent position.

With regards to: "(Archers getting some respect, maybe?)" - Never going to happen.

the point is, you can't hold a bow(that was used in war) long enough to walk around with it. you can't like a crossbow. and even if you would manage to keep it drawn while moving and stuff, when you would try to aim after that your arrow would be flying all over the place because you can't control your muscles well enough to aim anymore.

Yeah. The thing is, I'm talking about nocking it, and while it's nocked, you can relocate, but a lot slower than normal running speed.

After that, the second part of animation would come in: The drawing of the bow, and releasing the arrow.

That's bs. Irl when you have a nocked arrow you can do circus acrobatics and it wont budge. That would be perfect for game balance too.

I only thought about slowed movement so that running around like a bitch would be a bit harder.

But yeah, you can run while nocking an arrow, it's true.

owww. yes, that is possible, though you shouldn't be able to switch weapon with your arrow nocked or atleast you should drop your bow

but most archers moan about that they cant hit anything after 1-2 secs of drawing an arrow, i have done it many times and works as a great tactic to purposely wait that few extra seconds, if the target is medium to close range u will probably get a hit atleast, buty personally archery is quite fine atm in my opinion and i dont know why alot of people are constantly moaning that its too nerfed, or that it shopuld be more nerfed

Did you even read the thread? This isn't about nerfing or buffing archery. This is about making it different.

Has anyone else noticed the position of the draw arm when pulling the bow? Totally NOT how any RL archer would do it (if you could even manage to draw a bow like that anyway). Arm needs to be parallel not perpendicular with front arm.

The game is filled with odd little details, such as some helms having the Breather Holes on the left side instead of the right (as most blows strike the left side of a helm so you need to put the holes on the right, as was common, to help keep the left strong).

Overall though it is the least of my worries  I think the stats need more attention then minor graphical details.
