So whaddya think about this bit of news?

http://www.creative-assembly.com/sega-and-creative-assembly-announce-partnership-with-games-workshop-to-create-warhammer-games/

Are we seeing a potential Warhammer Fantasy/40k Total War or a whole new IP?

I'm really interested in seeing it and I pray to sweet baby jesus they'll make a 40k Total War over a fantasy one.

I heard it was only for the Warhammer franchise, not the 40k part.

Umm, wasn't it THQ, that held the rights, not Relic?

Yes, that's right, and I doubt they'll be sharing.

Anyway, 40k rights are fine where they are. Creative Assembly is more suited for Fantasy Battle, really. Warhammer: Total War might be pretty neat.
Don't.

The WH40k rights would've been on the auction if they could sell them. I suspect either Games Workshop has it, or it came as a bundle with Relic. If games workshop has the licence, I wouldn't be surprised to se Sega get it.

I guess there's a small chance that the license remains with THQ since the contract states that they can't sell it and that Game Workshop can't get it back easily.

Here's the rest what THQ auctioned away:

- Sega agreed to purchase Relic
- Koch Media [Deep Silver] agreed to purchase Volition and Metro
- Crytek agreed to purchase Homefront
- Take 2 agreed purchase Evolve and
- Ubisoft agreed to purchase [THQ] Montreal and South Park

(in case some people haven't heard. THQ filed for Chapter 11 a month or so ago.)

I agree. I bought the THQ pack last steam sale. Space Marine was super awesome, though, short. And Dawn of War's are great.

Here are the prices: http://kotaku.com/5978425/thq-is-getting-sold-off-today++heres-everything-we-know

Relic was the most expensive one.

Would be great so see colab from relic and creative assembly.  They both make cracking RTS games and could bring alot to a partnership.  While I'm twiddling my thumbs waiting for CoH2 and R:TW2 i can fantasise about some epic game that they could make.

I bet they could make a really awesome Warhammer: Total War.
Because they are starting to run out of history for the regular total wars.
But the w40k license is returned to gamesworkshop, atleasts thats what i read. No doubt SEGA will buy it

Starting to run out? They've already done each of the periods twice. So yeah, it's really about time they got some fresh material. I'm surprised they haven't done anything with the Early Modern yet.

As for the collab with GW, it probably won't be a straight up Total War game, but rather something that adapts the WHFB rules to a Total War -style game. Certainly an idea with a lot of potential, since with the units of soldiers and everything it's already pretty close. I know there was an old Warhammer RTS game like that back in the day (before the first Shogun, even), and some newer one as well, but I never got around to playing them.

Well, i personally don't care if it's a Warhammer: Total War or whatever, as long as Relic pumps out more WH40k titles. Relic is physically incapable of creating bad games, as long as they're wh40k :)

What's wrong with repeating eras?

Medieval and Rome are the best anyway so I am fine with them putting out a new iteration of those every 5-10 years with a new engine and gameplay enhancements.
