Because every forum needs one.
Since I am first I will post a song and not rate any others.
We'll start with some
Wintersun - Starchild (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lc4WFzl-6Xs)
-
Well it's all subjective and opinions but what the hell, I'll bite:
While technically sound and proficient I'm just not much of a fan of the major scale rifmy old friende done at high speed. Sounds too... up-beat I guess is the best way to describe it. Even minor scale riffing, while darker and quite full of melody and harmonics, has become a bit worn out in my old age. I tend to prefer more jazz phrasings and off-color/darker emotions in my music (phrygian mode for intance is a personal fave of mine) Still the musicians are solid, so i give them credit for that. The leads are executed well.
The vocal stylings as well seem a bit cliche' and aren't really to my taste, though I have definately heard worse. Though I'm fairly picky about what I consider a good vocalist, it's not a game-breaker for me as I listen mostly for the instrumental and emotional content and as long as the vocals aren't atrocious I can for the most part overlook them altogether. Lyrical content I won't judge on because not every song from every band is going to be a mind-bending dissertation driven by deep thoughts about the nature of society, god, the universe, politics, etc.
TLDR: Not my cup of tea, but the musicianship is solid so I'll give them 3.5 / 5 horns
\m/.
A personal favorite band of mine in the progressive/metal genre's. I've seen them twice, and absolutely love their sound. Vocals aren't the absolute top of my list, but they serve the music quite well and again I listen more for the emotion within music:
Gojira - Global Warning from the album "From Mars to Sirius"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MHEe5-4Ecg&feature=related
-
Oh, Gojira's a beauty, definitely.
I'm not a musician, so I dont really know much about techniques and stuff, but the riffs sound clean, the emotion behind fits well, it might even slightly fit into the technical Deathmetal. It does kinda remind me of the old In Flames-albums mixed together with Grip Inc. I'd give it a 8/10 rating.
I can't really choose a favorite song, but I do very much like this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7fuuDc2hH0&feature=related
Arkona - Goi, Rode, Goi
Especially our Russian fellows can say sth to it prolly, as they at least understand it what Masha is singing. xD
-
Definatly one of the best russian pagan metal bands, very beautiful female vocal. But for some reason i don't like the guitars in this specific song.
Here's some of my favourite:
Amon Amarth - Runes to my memory
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVWBJHVSrAE

Nice !
Let's add some diversity
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAP5fL84sKw
-
Eh, I dont really like organ music, so I'd rather not rate it.^^
@Tholgar: That's a good choice too and it's nice to see some non-russians knowing Arkona too. xD
Next one is a A-Capella band from Germany called Van Canto. it's unique, but still kinda Metal. They cover a lot of songs, but they also have their own ones. Like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rt4CQc1MSso&feature=related
(even fits into the Warband-culture xD)
-
Van Canto is very original band. I like most of their songs :)
Here's one from Blind Guardian - Bard's Song:

"The Gunslinger" by Demons & Wizards

Lolno you aint moving this in our forums, pshoooo nasty anarhist

I appreciate this kind of threads, since it makes me discover new songs/groups. And i'm all for adding some musical knowledge to my library.
I won't be much original, and appreciate Rock. Maybe cause i can dance on some of it with... someone. And just fool around on other, especially in front of my computer.
Green Day - Boulevard of Broken Dreams
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWNRUVMboq4
-
Green Day... never really been into them, but they have some nice songs. Boulevard is a pretty emotional song, too quiet for my tastes and not really fitting, seeing as they have been a pretty popular punkband earlier. But still, it is a nice song to listen to sometimes.
German Pagan Metal... best there is around here and this is one of the most beautiful songs they have imo.

.. and now something completelly different, a piece of real life, that is it

Backbone is great, all their songs are great, but I just have a particular love for the more progressive/melodic songs.

As you can see, I'm in love with this desert/stoner/hard rock sound, it became my fav. genre over the years. It's very good for listening, playing, driving, everything! Heavy Fuzz'd guitars, kick ass riffs, beer and women. What else do you need?
-
Am I the only one not posting hard rock ? (not that I don't like hard rock though)

Back into the dark

Great song, loved the lyrics but the instrumental solos played the main part in my mind. The lyrics were nice, if a little blurred out by modulated guitar.

Not hugely into Dimmu Borgir but this song kicks ass.

Ok, so here are the three best songs in the world. If you disagree, you probably have your speakers muted or are just disagreeing to be cantankerous.
This one comes with a video, I think its a clip from some film, dunno which one. Or just a really enthusiastic amateur maybe. Who knows?:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItPbGvPKHFI
It takes a lot of guts to make your guitar sound this chunky, some people will call you a fool, but they just don't understand your genius:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHQCC4TMZB4
Like all successful 80s electro musicians, the lead singer has an imposing brow (a sign of quality):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5XJ2GiR6Bo
Enjoy!
