General Discussion / Re: Best Sword+Board Build?
« on: June 11, 2012, 11:32:19 pm »
I re-genned a few days ago and went with a 1h+shield build. Going for the standard 21/15 build and I'm using a broad one handed axe right now which I'm loving. As long as you don't face high-end tin-cans, you should be doing great damage and you'll make short work of enemy shields. The range means you'll need to get close, but that's cool since it kind of gimps most 2handers. Not sure whether I should stick to my huscarl shield or get a faster one :)

What? Only thrust and overhead turning speed were changed, how does that affect defending at all?

It doesn't. I can still shield-block tons of enemies at once.

Spain - Italy is surprisingly entertaining so far, did not expect Italy to attack this much and have this much possession

Prandelli, the Italian coach, is known for his offensive approach. He never sits back and defends. Odd that, him being Italian and all :D

Angellore and Trikipuma. Both often go 1h on horseback and plow through the enemy. I can't wait to fucking hit lvl31 (6000xp left! :D ) and go 1h on foot.

General Discussion / Re: What will get me to stop Horse Crossbow
« on: April 21, 2012, 04:21:26 pm »
And why do I keep getting conflicting reports???

Because people like bending reality to the shadow it casts on their mind. Right now there's a good amount of horse xbows on the EU battle servers. I started playing CRPG roughly a month ago and after a pole-arm build, I quickly made another character who went horse xbow. Why? I saw it mentioned that you could use a light xbow on horseback on the forums and the idea stuck. Little did I know that other people start treating you like you're using the AWP on horseback WHILE camping. Even if you're the first to charge forward, seeking out duels with lancers.

Now, a contingent of the Bandit clan is trying it out. There's a bunch of lads called 'US Cavalry' that do it while screaming 'LIBERTY, FREEDOM' and such phrases. My verdict on what role the HX has? You are there to zone out their lancers. If you can't kill them with a well-placed HS as you charge one another, just kill their horses. The high armor/hp horses might take a few bolts, but because you do high piercing damage they still go down. Their immobility lets you easily put in some headshots. As long as you stick to a lancer-buddy, you should be able to cause terror. Just flank 'em and they'll be too busy sticking to their defensive pose to be a threat.

Truthfully, I think horse archers are 'just as bad'. The difference is is that a HX has better aim but less shots, whereas a HA can spam away. Good HA's absolutely devastate any HX tho :/

tl;dr - people are starting to try it out on EU and some are becoming pretty good at it, inspiring more people to try it out.

I'm a first gen noob using a cheap str 7 armor, a light xbow and steel bolts with an arabian warhorse. I went from 20k to 6k over the course of 3 days. Something regarding horse upkeep changes and it's causing me to go broke. I understand having to pay upkeep, but this is just ridiculous. Now horses are just old-genners only?

It would be fun from a min-maxer point of view to have multiple options too - now you know what's best and there's no diverting from that. You can wear other stuff and do so because you love it, but it's pretty clear what's best. Diversity please! :D

Robb's wolf isn't cgi btw - they filmed a real wolf and digitally 'enhanced' him -> they made the wolf a bit bigger.

I actually never imagined Stannis to be imposing. Rather grim, sullen and stubborn. But even then I agree, so far the the HBO-version lacks seriousness and strength. But his voice I like, actually.

Wait a bit and we'll see.

If you read the chapters (like the burning of the idols) again, you'll see that Stannis often has a 'get this over with' attitude towards things he doesn't like / isn't comfortable with. He has a love/hate relationship with R'hhlor and simply isn't too happy with the burning of the idols. Hence his 'okay, this is done, get the fuck out'. The way he handled the writing of the letter was perfect Stannis, now to see how he deals with Renly :)

And I absolutely love Davos. Couldbn't have casted him better.

Game Balance Discussion / Re: the horse crossbowman problem/motf
« on: April 02, 2012, 01:09:57 pm »
Slamz is right. Horse xbows are like Archers on roofs, except with roofs they can move.

A pair of tenacious fast lancers can make your life impossible. A single good horse archer shits on your parade. A couple of archers and or crossbows working together mean you gotta stay your distance and harrass the enemy elsewhere. Infantry with shields and some throwing weapons mean you can't really come close. Put a bunch of those together and you're fucked.

Also, when you're 1vs20, you should just step off your horse, throw down your gear and run into them with flailing fists. I sometimes get called a 'stalling my old friend' when I try to win 1vs2-3, but I just take that as them being sore losers. I play M&B in a window so I can watch some webshows, series or browse reddit and forums when I'm dead. This game is so old that if you can't do this, go work an hour at the McDonalds so you can buy a 5 year old graphics card so you can do the same.

Historical Discussion / Re: Longsword Fighting
« on: April 02, 2012, 01:16:12 am »
A couple of years ago they discovered a book in a monastery about the martial arts taught by knights to knights. It shows knights were more than simple brutes that actually got taught a wide array of martial techniques ranging from boxing, wrestling, holds and throws and of course fighting with weapons. More and more European-style fighting schools are popping up where they try to teach you according to the lessons from this book and what other things are left. Oddly enough, little is known of the martial traditions of knights (from what I know!).

Great vids, very inspiring watch :)

Beginner's Help and Guides / Re: Horse xbow questions.

I just wonder how big the difference is between riding 9 and 10 - going str 10 would allow for way better armor and together with iron flesh 3, more durability. Add in a cataphract horse ..

but it feels like a big gambit trying it out :x

how about horse xbow accuracy?  are they accurate? and while riding?

Insane accuracy - the only problem is the drop-off. The bolt goes down really fast .. so it will take some time re-adjusting to that. Luckily your bolt seems to get some of your speed if you're aiming forward while riding :)

Oh and prepare for lots and LOTS of hate. The bandit clan poll to kick/ban me in turns xD but who gives a damn about them.
