Title: Rain broken?
Post by: Angantyr on March 07, 2014, 11:43:40 am
What is up with rain? Feels like a lot more than the already ridiculous 15% chance (that only someone who doesn't play the mod regularly or at all would think is a good balance between rain and calm weather).

If we must content with the enervating athletics decrease please tell us how to remove the incessant visuals and especially audio of constant downpour when using WSE2? The sound alone can drive you insane map after map day after day, for years on end.

It is beyond me how anyone would think the way rain is currently implemented is anywhere near optimal, I can take one map with rain but more than that in a row (which happens constantly) I just log out.

agree that rain should not have a ingame effect in a game like this only, a visual effect for the feels.

I honestly feel like it hardly ever rains. In fact with the amount of ranged on lately I wish it rained a bit more.

If you care about ranged damage more than movement speed that is.

For someone like me, rain makes ranged much more dangerous.

I also think that there's definetely too much rain at the moment. It feels like every second till 3rd map is rainy or foggy as fuck...
Please change it and cRPG would be more fun again

Rain.. Cloud.. Fog.. Darkness.. I have enough of that living in England and it's depressing enough as it is without having to experience it on C-RPG on most maps. There should be a far larger % of maps where it's day time and clear, it makes weather and night time a variety rather than just an annoyance, even though they're still annoying. ( Especially knowing that when it's thick fog, there are plenty of archers out there who don't even see the fog, gg my old friendets ).

Is it 15% per map, or 15% per in-game day? Cause if it's 15% per map, .... eh..... y'know, 15% per day might actually be worse. It'd rain on ALL the maps for a 12 cRPG hour period!  Nevermind!

How about this? The % chance of precipitation be a varying number based on what the outer terrain of the map is.

outer_terrain_plain
outer_terrain_plain_2
outer_terrain_snow
outer_terrain_snow_2
outer_terrain_steppe
outer_terrain_steppe_2
outer_terrain_desert
outer_terrain_desert_b
outer_terrain_beach - Ocean on one side, grassy hills on the other three.
outer_terrain_town_thir_1
outer_terrain_castle_9
sea_outer_terrain_1 - Ocean on one side, grassy mountains on the other three.
sea_outer_terrain_2 - Ocean on all sides.

As you can see, that presents the possibility of 13 unique precipitation chances.
If outer terrain is desert or desert_b, you have a VERY low chance of rain like 2% (I always hate rain when playing on a desert map). Outer terrain is snow or snow_2 you have a chance of snow (which I imagine snow is already determined by a boolean on whether the outer terrain is snow or not.) Some outer terrain backgrounds have hills, whereas others have mountains which would effectively put the area of play on the map in a valley, so you could have a bit higher chance of precipitation on those maps as compared to the ones with hills.

You can base chances for fog in the same way. Think of it. It's 4am in cRPG time. You're at the town docks (beach or sea terrain) and a light fog is rolling in from the sea. We can have this stuff make sense!

You think we should post this in the suggestions forum? I really do think this is a good idea, and would not be too terrible to implement.

I think I might have accidentally convinced cmp to increase the frequency.  :(

At fifteen, I had the will to learn; at thirty, I could stand; at forty, I had no doubts; at fifty, I understood the heavenly Bidding; at sixty, my ears were opened; at seventy, I could do as my heart lusted without trespassing from the square..

I'm 90% sure that the devs are members of a secret cabal of optometrists who added dark and rainy weather as a "feature" to cause eye strain and drive up business.

i dont mind rain either, IRL its annoying as well but i think that several maps in row with rain is not very realistic

Rain should give higher penalty to heavy troops. But I think rain's effect should be lowered for everyone, because it's just absurd to be so penalized when we talk about the movement speed... 7 ATHL here, and slow as fuck when it rains.

It's bit realistic tho but as You said, it is definetely too much...

 :?

What can be done about this? Have for a long time suspected that the amount of rain was some troll move on part of cmp

In the least please let us be able to turn off particle effects and the sound in WSE2. Also, perhaps more normal weather for battle now that the season is changing?

And again, besides being enervating in the long run with the occasional exception Medieval battles in rain is a Hollywood drama prop.

I hate shit weather, but the problem should be solved by reducing rain/fog rates rather than legalizing "3rd party modifications that give the user an advantage" (read: cheats)

I fully agree, but turning off particle effects is a vanilla option only rendered ineffective by WSE2. Though the sound and athletics decrease is a lot more bothersome than the visuals.

To be honest, I don't want to see rain removed entirely. I like the concept, but the implementation seems off somehow. Unfortunately my assessment left me thinking that rain is annoying because it doesn't change things enough. That it's simply there to slightly nerf certain builds and playstyles randomly. If the effects were so large that you literally had to change the way you played when there was rain, then it changes from being "just a nerf", to an important game dynamic. Really though, it seems like more simply needs to happen; Increased knockdown chance, wooden shields taking more damage on each hit, different movement effects based on the terrain(gravel, sand, mud), puddles appearing in certain areas, fallen trees. Mostly things that simply cannot be done with this engine, but would nevertheless help to keep players from feeling as if it's "just a nerf".

Please remove the negative effects of rain already.
If not, atleast add a speed increase to movement and weapons during nighttime to compensate.
I mean, it's not like the current negative effects of rain are realistic. Rain doesn't slow you down as much as it does ingame...
So make us fast as vampires during nighttime.

Not sure if serious, and I don't hope you are due to the implications, but could we please revert to old, already mind-boggling values?

It rains all the time, and no it doesn't help against ranged, all it does is make everything slower and life bleaker.

Just logged in for a quick session between classes - night and rain and fog - logged out again. Going to do laundry.

Laundry is more fun than cRPG rain, except if you put yourself in the washing machine, in which case it's pretty damn close (because you die after two minutes).

Bullshit I once survived a full wash cycle in the washing machine, but I often cannot play Crpg for longer than a couple of minutes when its raining and/or night time.
