Not that I'd willingly mess with those things, but I kinda doubt that this thing could sever an arm.

It'd definitely leave quite a nasty gash or puncture wound, but unless the underside of that nail has been filed down to rival the sharpness of a katana blade folded 1,000 times, I dunno about it's reported ability to sever limbs with ease.

https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/tetrapod-zoology/how-dangerous-are-cassowaries-really/
Apparently most of the attacks and deaths were not unprovoked.

"However, cassowaries do not attack indiscriminately and a 1999 study by Christopher Kofron (1999) of 221 recorded attacks by Casuarius casuarius johnsonii showed that attacks are mostly due to association of humans with food. Several attacks (7) appeared to be a territorial reaction to the presence of humans in an area where the cassowary was feeding while some (32) were clearly defensive – the cassowary was either protecting itself or its chicks or eggs. McClean’s death in 1926 was not the result of an unprovoked attack: he had struck the bird with the intention of killing it and had then fled; he also had a dog with him (Kofron 1999, 2003). By far the greatest number of attacks (109) involved soliciting of food by the cassowary. In areas where humans have taken to feeding cassowaries, some cassowaries act boldly and aggressively in expectation of being fed and will run up to or chase people, sometimes kicking if no food is offered. Kofron (1999) reported that such behaviour was not recorded in his study area prior to 1985. Human feeding would thus appear to have modified cassowary behaviour and in fact cassowaries are naturally wary and highly unlikely to attack without provocation."

So has it been confirmed yet that these things are direct descendants of velociraptors?

Well sorry Mr. Smartypants, wasn't expecting to run into a dinosaur know-it-all on the crpg forums (other than my main man Bronto, for obvious reasons). But I stand by my statement, velociraptors did indeed have the large claw, they're just not as big as portrayed in jurassic park (doesn't mean the cassowary can't be a relative of the velociraptor, and therefore the deinonychus).

Valid point. Though in all my years wandering about the forest I've never stumbled on a bear. They tend to go the other way once they hear you.

We just don't have birds that are vicious like that here. We have Canadian geese here that shit EVERYWHERE that about as bad as it gets.

You need to get out more, or something. There are plenty of sightings down here in my small section of murica (CT), they've even been spotted on the trails I frequent. Just last fall my brother invited me to go mountain biking with him one day, I declined as I was busy, and he ran into a bear. I coulda seen a mofuckin bear damnit! Around here that's like a badge of courage.

Even kangaroos are rare where I live; largest animal I've encountered in the wildy is a 1ft wallaby. People do occasionally get eaten by crocs in the northern parts of the country, but I'd still feel much safer treking around aus than NA tbh.

really the biggest thing to watch out for is pit bulls, or even worse, PACKS of pitbulls.

remember, if you don't have a firearm on your person and are being mauled by a pitbull, the best chance you've got is to grab hold of both front legs and spread as hard as you can- if you are lucky you might separate their sternum and be able to escape

...what? I'm guessing they've got some genetic deformity that gives them a weak sternum or something?

Anyways, story time: An old friend of my dad's worked as a mailman (worked in a city where he walked door to door, didn't drive from mailbox to mailbox), and rather stereotypically, two dogs attacked him one day (this was back before leash laws existed). Now, this dude was absolutely ripped and when the first dog jumped at him he grabbed it by the jaws and king konged the mofuckah.

After the first one dropped dead, the second dog ran away. The end.
