You're all completely beside the point. The only serious danger of GMO crops is uncontrolled dissemination of the modified genes into the native populations. In Mexico, maize is in an extremely poor shape because natural breeds have almost all been contaminated with GMO breeds, essentially killing them off. That danger is basically impossible to protect against, and so it very well might be that the right way forward is to ban most GMO crops entirely, but accept imported GMO products as long as their effects on humans have been reasonably tested. In some cases the safety regulations don't even make any sense. Colza oil is still oil.

Most crops that are in the state you describe for corn got that way because of selective breeding over years and years.  How exactly does GMO corn contaminate and kill native corn?  Man kind has been modifying genes for thousands of years.  I don't think that you can cite any scientific studies that agree with that position.

My biggest worry about these GMO crops is that they are patented. I'm not too worried about "contamination" in the sense that they are some evil mutant harmful crop poisoning the "natural" crops man has been genetically manipulating (along with animals) for thousands of years already, as you point out. But when they do contaminate non-GMO fields the response is to bring out the lawyers and sue for patent infringement. Food independence and self-sustainability are a matter of national security. Putting that in the hands of some multinational corporation with zero loyalty to any one country and interest in nothing but profit strikes me as short sighted. I'm all for scientific advancement in the service of mankind, but for thousands of years seed merchants and farmers have manipulated crops and freely exchanged the results in a "free market" of sorts. What is the competition to Monsanto, exactly? They're positioning themselves as a monopoly. They've been buying out independent seed banks for decades. A monopoly on the very genetic blueprints that mean life for billions of people. That is worrying.

Actually this is closer to the truth than you might think. Gene modifications allow for far more than merely accelerated breeding. Bt corn has contaminated a large number of native species in Mexico even in very far out mountainous regions far away from GMO crops and even though there has been a ban on GMO corn agriculture. Because the engineered corn has a tremendous evolutionary advantage over most native breeds it tends to replace them. If that trend continues, eventually the only corn you'll be able to grow will be owned by Monsanto. On top of that the protections against various corn diseases disrupt local ecology by messing with insects. This is acceptable for crops, but not for wild plants.

Obviously the patent issue is also a non-starter.

Typically if a cities council or elected officials want a police dept., they set aside money and fund them.  They hire the police chief and all of its officers, they also pay for their wages and create laws for that specific city to abide.  Now having the power to hire and fire its staff does grant them a certain degree of control over a cities or towns police dept, not to mention any complaints or issues filter through them and down hill to the agency they created.  So logically, to a degree, yes they control the police and arent necessarily limited to mundane tasks like trash.

Now, i dont know if the local government system in the UK works in the same fashion, but ive experienced first hand how that plays out in small towns and cities in the areas ive worked.
