SNES? What is this modern sorcery? Grew up on ma NES, made a bit of a technological jump to PS2. Went from Tetris and Mario to SSX and 007 Nightfire in one go.

In that case you missed shitloads of awesome games :D

Especially the N64 was an insane amount of fun with games like Mario Kart, Smash Bros., Mario Party, and the best of them all:

I just found my SNES in my dad's garage when I went to visit him recently. The little bastard still works and all the games too. After being in the garage, for I don't know, 20 years or so. Hooked that shit up to my giant ass TV in my man cave and played it for about 10 minutes. At least it still works.

The NES was better then the Genesis simply because the games were better...  The real question was SNES or Playstation.  I was an SNES kid but mainly because it was what I had as a kid.  In any case PS2 was the greatest console of all time.  It had absolutely the best pre-morrowind era RPGs ever made most of which are still relevant today.  (Final Fantacy, Xenosaga, Shadow Hearts, to name a few that I still own.)

The real question was SNES or Playstation.

Bruh, that ain't even a question. Playstation blew everything else out of the water back then. Sure N64 had some memorable titles, but overall, the PS1 was the better system with plenty of classics of its own.

Did you play Castlevania on the NES?  Probably my favorite game back then.

The dreamcast was the best console that nobody bought.  Truly ahead of its time.

and Microsoft totally stole their controller for the xbox.  Don't even get me started on the N64 controller...

No modern games compete with this level of replay-ability and level design, the moment games let you 'save' was the moment gaming became easy and about 'how many hours does this take me to complete and throw away'.

It's rare.  I think video games are getting really expansive, you know, there's all of this extra fluff that gets tossed into these games and they get advertised as having >x number of features.  But that's not what really interests players as much as the underlying mechanics that go into it.  And that leads me to think that some of what we experience when we turn on our dusty old 90s consoles isn't pure nostalgia.  Sure, that's part of it, but I really believe that the titles themselves were of a superior class of games.  Because with every popular title we have from back then we have some new style of game, some novel mechanic that no one had ever thought of before, and that was really exciting.  So now that I think about it, it's not just nostalgia, these were really creative games that continue to captivate me and a lot of other people.
