i have a car to be independent, i don't use it to go to work, because my work is approximately 2 meters from my bed, but i use it for going anywhere anytime i like when its reasonably faster than other kind of traffic. in prague its 75% public transport and 25% car, outside prague its the opposite. it makes life much easier. i used to be road bike for life guy as well (going 2x20km to high school every day except for december-february), but now i'm to old for that kind of shit

Most of the people I know that have their own cars, their car is basically the only valuable thing they own and they're actually pretty poor (also due to the running cost of said car) :p
sold the alfa romeo i got from me mum when i was 18, proud member of byk mastru race, having saved probably tons of money that I would have otherwise spent on fuel, maintenance and car license registration
