because if you are paying a monthly fee you can do better than AoC.
Just out of curiousity, what would you say is better than AoC (subscription based MMOs now)

I'm more of a fan of sandbox MMO's so the only one I'd currently consider paying for or recommending would be Mortal Online despite the fact they have only EU servers. It features dumbed down M&B combat in a sandbox RPG world with full-loot. Also has some grindyness to get your character leveled up, not too bad though and once that's done its smooth sailing.

I heard Mortal Online was pretty broken and glitchy when it came out first.
How's it doing nowadays? Population and gameplaywise?

Yeah I played it in beta and when it first came out and it was a mess. That was like four years ago though.

It is significantly better but can still be buggy here and there. Population is nice though there is only one server. A lot of people are old timers but they seem to get newer people in here and there. Its kinda like Warband in that you get to recognize people pretty quick. Of course this is good in my opinion for a full-loot game, you know people's reputations. Gameplay is good too, just give it a try it has free and premium accounts too. Free accounts have all their skills limited to 60 and though you can level them higher there is no benefit until you sub. Should definitely give you enough preview of the game. They added a tutorial too to get you started.

They are on steam greenlight now and have been prettying up the game a good deal.

I'd recommend downloading it through the torrent option, it downloads real quick as opposed to the others.

Been playing ArcheAge quite a bit recently, a couple of friends got it (my brother got the founders pack for free since he participated in the alpha, lucky git) and we've had good fun roaming around.
It's the first time that the Caravan Guild has actually done what we set out to do, protect a trade caravan for money.

Highly enjoying traveling about, been attacked by pirates probably 20% of the times I've made a trade run, never actually lost a pack yet which is nice but I've not been out of my comfort zone and headed to the other continent yet, although my friends have and they've had roughly a 50% success rate.

There are a couple of different types of boat, and the first one I think most people will build is a clipper, which you have two types of, one with a cannon and one with a harpoon. The harpoon is usually used by players to latch onto another boat and reel them in, which pirates have attempted to do before to myself. On my first trip out as ship captain on a trade run with a couple of guys, pirates used their harpoon to latch onto our boat, they didn't get us because one of them decided to use his glider to jump over to our boat, I used the harpoon that was stopping us from sailing quickly to pivot around the pirate at a faster speed than he expected, causing him to land in the water, and managing to get to a "safe zone" where same-kingdom pirates could no longer attack us (out of rough waters).

It really does mean that you can't just afk while transporting goods, and from a Caravan Guild point of view, it really really does mean that our services are required. There are a lot of large clans that can afford to create raid parties and transport goods around, but for a lot of the smaller clans or individual players trying to make runs, having a bit of muscle really deters the bandits.

My biggest bugbear is the number of gold-spammers, but I guess that's just part and parcel with MMOs these days. They are being combated but the occasional one slips through, as you can see by the screenshot.

I'll see if I can get some beta keys for the next one, if there is one, I'll certainly be playing it on release.

How did you get into alpha?

I didn't get into alpha, I got into second closed beta.

As for AoC, it's a cool game, if you want to be serious you need to get premium though (Alternate Advancement is only for paying users, and this is like another skill/talent tree). Too bad the devs prefer to work on PvE rather than doing something meaningful with PvP, which is what AoC should be about.

We once harpooned some poor guys rowboat (he was afk on it), we dragged him out of the safezone and then gangbanged him  But yeah, this game is a lot about PvP. After level 30 you'll be playing in PvP zones and you'll need to have your eyes on your butt the entire time (except those 2 hours of peace). Sea is never safe either, neither is the northern continent, which is for big scale PvP and castle sieges.

This was my guilds castle in alpha

As you said, there truely is a meaning to caravan guards in this game :) Except in the case of big guilds of course:

Is it worth to get it prem? How much is it €? Might just try it out..
If you buy the game you can play it for free until you reach the max level. Then you have to subscribe or you'll be in a disadvantage.

Judging by your post Tenne, ArcheAge seems like tons of fun!
I've long wanted to get into this sandbox-ish type of game with heavy emphasis on PvP. I gave Darkfall Online a try back in the days but got put off quick by the mess that the game was.
I remember getting ganked in the starting zone >_>

Yeah, Darkfall is a ruthless place, but biggest drawback for me was the fact that you literally had to grind hunderds of the same type of mobs to increase skills. ArcheAge won't put you under the crosshair from start, you won't experience PvP till about level 30 (of 50), when both sides start going to the same zone. From that point on it's pretty brutal :D You don't lose anything by dying yourself, but if you die in the open sea transporting a bunch of trade packs it's gonna hurt (they'll probably destroy your ship too, so it's gonna cost).

Server's under DDoS attack at the moment tho.
The never-ending private server war is still going on it seems. Rumour has it that wow-one.com is behind the DDoS attacks on all the smaller 1.12.1 servers to fuck up the competition. Sigh.
