Kill yourself, that should do the trick

What an unbelievably stupid thing to say, even as a joke.

It's the only correct answer, though.

Come on man, you're smarter apparently more pretentious than that, and I know you are cause I like your posts I've read your posts.

I'm particularly sensitive about the concept suicide, and i'm sure there are others out there that are. I'm not trying to get into this or anything, i'm just saying be mindful! :D

But isn't suicide the greatest proof of your existence? Is it not the only power you have, ultimately? You are willing to eat, sleep, drink, fuck, piss, shit. But ultimately you are willing to do such things because you are only human. You are not a being of pure will, independent of the human brain. The choices you make are the result of the operation of your brain. Given that your brain is programmed for survival, suicide is the closest thing you have to asserting your identity and existence, if you believe there is more to you than opposable thumbs and pre-frontal lobes.

I believe that we are indeed nothing more than opposable thumbs and pre-frontal lobes, at least until proven otherwise. As far as I can see we're just more clever, less hairy apes. As such suicide can be merely a symptom of being a failure, a genetic dead end, one in billions of human individuals that just couldn't cope with the random evolutionary pressures we subject ourselves to. Brain is wired for survival, but you don't seek survival: you have a faulty brain. Thats ignoring the moral implications of suicide, which is/was taboo in the vast majority of cultures unless highly ritualized.
Of course the best human being that ever lived (in evolutionary terms) may just as easily be driven to it by circumstances completely outside it's control. Life is a random, cruel bitch who works entirely on her own terms.

Seeing suicide as a failure implies there was something to succeed at. It also implies that success is worthwhile and failure is bad and something to be avoided.

If success is meaningless then so is failure and following that suicide. Thus suicide is just as meaningful and useful as not doing it when both are meaningless. Thus who gives a fuck.

Well theoretically people who don't care about success or survival wouldn't survive to breed or would breed less. So that characteristic of believing in "success" would be passed on as an evolutionary advantage. Probably why the world is covered with people struggling for better lives for themselves and their families and not apathetic misanthropic nihilists. If by "worthwhile" you mean spread your own genes and characteristics, which is pretty much the main and only goal of all forms of life on this planet, I don't see why you think humanity is exempt from this universal imperative, or any more immune to evolutionary pressures. We may not be subject to nature's whims as much as in the past, but we are under other forms of pressure in the social structures we've created.

Eh its a crapshoot either way. Having kids in order to further the goal of having more kids is a perpetual goal that means and achieves nothing especially when one takes the view that humanity is just thumbs with pre frontal cortexes. Saying one has a faulty brain to not breed and is a failure seems strange when taken with the previous view.

I also don't see how one gets any moral implications from suicide from such a view unless you're considering it not within your view but other potential worldviews.

If you're just trying to illustrate something in your previous post that I missed then I assumed something you weren't saying.

I know this feeling and it is fucking awful. It is the sole reason why I could not finish the painkiller and few other games. Unfortunatelly, you will either have to suffer through this and ope it gets better with time, or stop playing the game altogether.

I myself do not have any nausea problems with cRPG or mount and blade in general, but quake-like games such as unreal, painkiller quake arena and so on make me sick.

I fundamentally agree with Oberyn here as I also see no reason to believe consciousness is something more than the operation of the brain. Which means it is intrinsically linked to evolutionary pressures yadiyada.
The thing is that as humans we are intelligent enough to actually realize that. I don't think most animals are intelligent enough to reason about their consciousness or to question how it works. If you take the view that "we" are being "manipulated" by our reward systems etc. then suicide is the ultimate expression of free will. It's the proof that you are an individual, not shackled by evolution.

Alright guys, you've taught me a lesson. I'll never compliment anyone on the cRPG forums again, through fear of having them turn into the personification of pretentiousness.

I've got a lot of time for this topic- I'm studying for my Psy.D. Degree (Doctor of Psychology), albeit a long way to go- however, I'm not willing to play Socrates et Plato with you gentlemen on a public forum.

Feel free to send me an essay; with the topic pertaining to suicide, and I'll happily indulge.

Until then, peace out nerds.

Yeah suicide is a pretty stupid topic to have on a forum like this. You don't know what someone might take away from what someone says, especially if they have some sort of problem.
