Haha yes, TotalBiscuit mentioned this and coined the term "ludonarrative dissonance" in his Tomb Raider video, another game where you are a normal person sissy and turn psychotic murderer in twenty seconds without anyone even taking notice.

Actually I think it's very much tied in to what the norms of single player FPS gameplay are. Games where you aren't one person fighting a whole army of AI dumbdumbs are in fact extremely rare. This is incredibly unrealistic too. Ten years ago all the characters we had were cliche badass dudebro types, so it wasn't really a problem to see them kill thousands of people. But now that we have characters supposed to have emotions it doesn't make sense anymore. Also this is even apparent in parts of the game that are "pseudo-gameplay" such as QTEs. Very frequently, this type of game sort of "enters QTE mode" in order to force some negative event to happen, such as you getting ambushed and captured, because that would be impossible within actual gameplay. Interestingly, FC3 did treat the subject a little bit better than TR by at least acknowledging the fact that the "hero" became a mass murderer.

It seems the designers either failed to understand the issue or couldn't find a satisfying solution in gameplay. I think it could be possible to make realistic gun fights with very few enemies interesting, that would at least reduce the dissonance.
Maybe they just realized that it's a freaking first person shooter and not some rpg... -.-

FC2's setting, sound (remember the thump of the 50cal?) and general believablilty were superior to FC3.  What I mean by believability is that you played as a veteran-turned-merc instead of some playboy-turned-rambo who is miraculously able to dominate both a pirate and a mercenary organization with no training whatsoever.  Even if FC2's main lacked personality (due to the breadth of choice I'd imagine) he/she was still a far superior protagonist than Jason Brody on the grounds of believability alone.

That said, FC2 wasn't fun to play where as FC3 was.  The issue with the AI shooting, accurately, through ten meters of jungle, which you can't even flippin' see through, was intensely irritating.  That factor alone was enough to make the game a "once-through" for me.  Just about everything was fine if not great.
WSE2 gives us the key to a wonderful world of butthurt...

They're just saying it breaks the immersion (which in both games TR/FC3 was less than 0) and the flow of the story (which in both games was less than 0) this non accurate depiction of characters. that said I enjoyed eery game mentioned in this thread so far, we're just pointing out where they could have been better, some more, some less

As a minimum the game world should offer immersion. Something the good vs bad candyfloss theme park of FC3 was completely bereft of, and that the murky African civil war was brimming with.

I think Kafein doesn't mean anything bad by it, we had a similar discussion about GTA V preorder and I do get his points, basically they can only fuck up the port (which they did before) since I played the game and like it the risk is not as big, but there is another thing why we shouldn't support preorders.

This video summs it up pretty nicely and whatever you think of the guy he seem a fair sport and quite honest.
And now he can't play because of "common sense" and he doesn't understand how this common sense works

Far Cry 2 did so many things right. Graphics were great, weapon system was fun, shooting mechanics were pretty cool and the best thing was the atmosphere that it had. Africa felt damp and sweaty as hell. There were so much cool new things that few FPS had done before. Too bad they put in so much crappy repetitive gameplay of which everyone and their mother could grasp that it was a poor idea. It's like the first Assassin's Creed, all this cool innovation and great atmosphere, but mucking it up with the terrible repeating missions. Still Far Cry 2 is my favourite Far Cry and Assassin's Creed my favourite Assassin's Creed. Sequels made the games far better gameplay design wise, but lost a lot of character and convincing atmosphere.

Seriously you actually preferred Assassins Creed 1 over 2?

2 did everything 1 did but better. Everthing.

As for Far Cry, I enjoyed 3 a lot, 2 had some good parts but the gameplay was severely lacking, crazy long boring drives through the same respawning outposts, guns that broke after a few shots and dumb AI. 3 solved these issues except the dumb AI.

AC 1 was seriuslly lacking content if you think about how much AC 2 had. ACs in general are not bad games. The franchise just too overdone. They should have stopped at 2, until they came up with something really good. Everything after 2 is just beating a dead horse or for people who really like to look at architecture a lot....

I actually liked the way the original AC told its story.

I liked 2 as well especially Venice, played some other games too but it wasn't the same.

Having the exact same opinion here. FC2 was quite atmospheric. Gameplay and plot might have been somewhat crap but Africa definately felt better. Really praying here that they make a serius non-cartoony sequel in Africa but with current FC-s gameplay.

This 1 is a better trailer.

Don't forget the fact that Jason Brody, who never held a gun before, is a ace shot who can operate various kinds of shotguns, rifles, handguns and lmgs.

Still hyped for 4 doe.

Well I hardly care for the story either, if the gameplay is acceptable. It's still funny that they are trying to shoehorn more believable main characters into a genre that doesn't fit that at all, and it ends up ruining the thing they try to build.

Total biscuits a cunt, hes not even cynical, he is simply just a cunt about shit.

I can't stand him and whenever I hear people say he said this that blah blah I just can't take them seriously. Sorry Prps but the guy is a complete phony.

Please develop. People never seem to explain why they hate him, or why he's a "phony"?

About AC pretty much that. The story in AC2 was okay I guess, but it lacked the surgical focus of AC1. AC1 was very repetitive because basically it was a cycle of chatting with bearded dude (Al Mualim) then doing a mission, then chatting again, then another mission and so on like 10 times. But those dialogs were increasingly intriguing. They sometimes talk about very abstract subjects, yet everything they say is important.

people either get mad when he criticizes a favorite game of theirs or are butt-hurt internet bully-fighters who think hes a egotistical douche just because he has standards, a different style of humor and isn't kissing-ass/acting like a humbly baby to his fans (or because they get mad at him for something he said to a troll on twitter 3 or 4 years ago)
