The public demonstration is just icing on the cake. They didn't want another giraffe and decided to ditch that one because it was genetically redundant with the others (which is kind of like reversed eugenism). Instead of giving it to another zoo, they decided to kill it. Note that I don't think it was that easy to give it to another zoo because that other zoo had to be part of the same groups.

The childrens parents made the choice to bring them, and I can't see why this would in any way be harmful to them. They'll find it gross and interesting. Children are far less fragile than adults give them credit for. The Zoo did what the had to do to keep the gene pool clean. This happens a lot when managing animals, it's necessary to keep Zoo's functioning and in the long run have healthy animals. It's a responsible rational decision, just like any farmer would do.

Debate the necessity of Zoo's, instead of misunderstanding basic animal keeping.

Hell, how many healthy animals get killed everyday for no other purpose than to become food for obese humans? As far as captive animals go, Eugene the Giraffe had a good short and meaningful life.

to actually respect the meat you eat,  you should have at least seen an animal get slaughtered.  It should be like a meat eating drivers licence.

I've personally shot and killed, gutted, skinned, butchered and eaten animals.  Particularly antelope, elk, and deer.  I also have friends whose 10 year old kid has done the same.  Sure he thought it was kind of gross, for about five minutes, but it didn't hurt him.  I believe its very important for everyone to experience this at least once.  It gives you a greater appreciation for meat next time you casually pick up a pound of ground beef at WalMart.

I think kids past the age of say 4 or 5 should witness something similar to this, and then have it fully explained to them by their parents.

They could have done it in a more natural way.
like... putting it in the lions cage alive and letting the lions hunt it.

Seriously, I'm totally fine with the way they did it, there was no place for it and it had to be killed. Why not give the lion some of it's meat? And about slaughtering it in public:
From what I've heard this is totally normal in Denmark and noone HAS to watch it if it hurts his feelings.

Next people will go on a huge outrage about muslims killing Goats in public...

It was a private guy and the zoo declined cuz "a giraffe is not a pet". And I applaud them for it.

And nobody complains when the same zoo breeds mice and gas them to feed the snakes?
