I saw that long ago , its a quite a new sport  , started like 10 years ago .
The Battle of Nations is gonna be held in Croatia this year , since its very close to me i thought i will participate but than i found out that you need at least 10000 euros for the gear even more if u want more quality armor. So no thanks :)
Just go in cloth don't be an armor crutch like all of them.

It is fun to watch despite the fact it's missing the historical martial arts techniques aka swordfight, etc.
Like GrannPappy said, it is more about wrestling than anything else. I've been watching HEMA recently and longsword fights with a full armour are about spamming the ennemy. I once saw a guy throwing his sword to hit his opponent in these kind of combats; I was like '' What the fuck it that, for the sake of realism and historical accuracy''.
I also watch videos from a channel called scholagladiotoria and to be honest, they are very well-made and he himself teaches different techniques bases upon medieval and renaissance treaties. I wish I could learn swordfighting but, unfortunately there's no school in my town. I guess I'll go toward fencing for the moment

The goal of Strategus battles shouldnt be to deprive your enemies of players, but to have full roster both sides and have the gear/tactics/strategy win the day rather than lack of merc support.

Yeah like others have said, it's not replicating medieval sword fighting or tactics in battle.  It's basically martial arts with people wearing heavy armor.  If you know wrestling or jiu-jitsu you're likely going to be better off than someone who's proficient at swordplay.

I don't really understand why some people even have swords if you're going to be fighting someone who has a 1h mace.  Wouldn't that mace potentially kill someone through their armor?

Have you noticed that they all use some sort of falchion which are ugly in my opinion. If I were those guys, I would go for a historical outfit that represents
my country

In my opinion, this kind of wrestling/bar fight with armor is more realistic than anything, especially if both side of the battle is wearing armor.
Hell, why block or feint when u can bump someone with full plate on you and knowing u won't get hurt?

^This

Every soldier carried a dagger or spike. Keeping someone at reach was only possible if you kept your wep moving, as soon as your long weapon is stopped (by hitting or missing) you are going to be wrestling or fighting at your opponents range.

Falchions like the ones represents were used as the could cut and crush. Maces were extremely popular and I bet hundreds of injuries were incurred in this competition.

Its true that it does seem more like wrestling than swordfighting. but the more I think about it the more realistic it seems. I think it does show that pushing/triping people would have actually been very potent and lethal in actual medieval combat.

Yes they are blunted weapons but even edged ones are not lethal vs plate armour, whereas a surprise shove is a pretty effective way to kill a knight in armour, followed by a stab in the neck with a dirk of course.

we only think its really unrealistic because its not the way medieval fighting is portrayed to us in film and computer games. but I bet reality was a mix of both stabbing and shoving, alot more like wrestling than we like to think.
