Morningstar: Yay or Nay?

So I've been tinkering around with the Miaodao and I enjoy playing it a lot. Going for a 18/21 2hand build, possibly using a blunt weapon.

However, I've seen a lot of people using the morningstar with a shield. I'm interested in using it because of its can-opening pierce damage and bonus against shields.

How does it work with a shield in terms of speed/damage reduction? Is it worth using a shield with it? Should I invest in 1h skill if I want to use it?
Feel free to include other suggestions.

Isn't it like a 30% reduction on speed and damage when using 1h/2h weapons with a shield?

In my experience, 2h weapons used in their 1h mode are very handicapped. I would recommend against it.

I believe this is correct. There is a 30% speed and damage penalty. Makes it very hard to use.

Its not too bad tbh but the last time I used a morningstar 1h was in a strat battle where I had to pick up weapons and I got caught unawares with a morningstar while I had my shield on. I killed the guy and a couple others though. Had fun with it but it was slower than I'd like.

Roit then.

So morningstar is pretty shite with a shield.
How about 2h? and what about the Bar Mace/Studded Warclub? Are they any good?

Overall it's going to hit as hard as a Fighting Pick (i.e. not hard) while swinging slower than a Long Maul. A Fighting Axe (for instance) would be more effective in every situation.

But 1h morningstar looks cool, so do whatever is fun for you.

Morningstar with a shield is definitely a no-no if you aim for dueling capacity.

It must be the slowest weapon usable in 1H/shield mode. Experiment with different PS/WM/ATH builds and report back but I think its nice only if you are a anti-infantry cavalryman or a footman turtle teamplayer.

Don't bother with the shield on foot unless your manual blocking skills are absolutely atrocious.   If you interested in going as cavalry it can be effective but it's not necessary.

Don't use 2h weapons in 1h mode (with a shield).  They're shit and not worth it at all (too slow and not enough damage).  The Bar mace is a fun 2h weapon to use, and is very useful in group fighting (not so much in "duel" situations).
