The father of our queen, and the man who made the Kalmar Union possible. Valdemar Atterdag (byname means "day again" in Danish") is a controversial figure but undoubtedly one of the most important kings in Scandinavian history.
He saved the Kingdom of Denmark from utter destruction and more or less successfully manifested the power of Denmark against the Hansa (for example by conquering Visby on Gotland in 1361; that is what the painting below depicts). In later years he had the Swedish king Magnus Smek's (byname means "caresser" in Swedish) son marry his daughter, Margrete, and thus inadvertently or not laid the foundation for a union between the Scandinavian kingdoms.
