I do/did and many others as well, in LotRO for example. Be able to speak the Elvish language and you're having a lot of fun as well. I did for some time but forgot most already. Gosh, good old times!

Who the hell does actual roleplay in an MMO anyways ?
Even if you don't, the question whether it's an RPG can only be answered positive if you can. In Planetside, you are a soldier in a war. You cannot play a fisherman or a smith. The role is forced upon you.

The only true MMOFPSRPG was a game called Endless Ages that has already found its final death. It was a game before its time I'm afraid. The only game close to it now is Firefall, and honestly that one bored me to tears.

You forgot Face of Mankind :)

Darkfall (unholy wars)
Planetside
Haven & Hearth

only mmos currently playable I've enjoyed and would consider playing again.

edit: oh you asked for free & worth playing, asking for too much! haven & hearth is completely free tho.

Fair enough. Planetside is fun but its not what I mean when I say mmorpg. I want to try out darkfall but I never tried out the original so I don't know what unholy wars will be like. Don't want to jump in without knowing how it feels combat wise.

Even though I haven't ever RPed seriously I always picked RP servers for an MMORPG (for example played Vanilla WoW on a RP-PvP server) simply because the community was much more mature.

I have found myself RPing in games. but not in mmos and maybe not in the tradional sense.

for example I used to love playing pvkii and talking to my teamates via voip in a pirate accent, or viking etc. I liked rp'ing characters in cRPG, at least in terms of equipment/playstyle; ninja, samurai, viking etc. always more fun than only picking best stat items.

RP servers might have more mature communities, but the sort of roleplay intended for RP servers is just fucking stupid and pointless. I realise this is just my opinion but games like pvkii/crpg even singleplayer rpgs have much more interesting capacity for roleplaying than these so called "mmorpg"s.

aye, yon rather stationary gentlemen also doth asketh me to killeth 10eth rats.

Well, you usually don't do rat kill quests when you RP a gentleman.

that i agree with, i enjoy RPin in Singplayer rpgs more than anything, but the problem with crpg/pvkii/Chivarly is..well...no one is RPing in those games, they feel too competitive

also, i once did some hardcore RPing in minecraft before, it was....interesting

The only form of roleplay I do is through ingame stuff not communication channels because I find that it tends to get incredibly silly. Setting up arbitrary rules to roleplay (like e.g. never ever using alchemy as a warrior) feels more real.

That's fine. Roleplay just means you play out a role, and are not yourself.

I pretty much always roleplay, even though it's very light in some games, like cRPG.

It's why my characters are so strongly defined by their character concept. I have a ninja, a zulu, a barbarian, etc. It's very rare for me to break that character concept. If I want to try something new, I make another character.

In Skyrim I actively avoid taking gear that doesn't fit the climate.

My primary problem with these MMO"RPGs" is that they don't allow me to do this and succeed because it's so heavily statbased that you need to wear the best gear possible.

The only form of roleplay I do is through ingame stuff not communication channels because I find that it tends to get incredibly silly.

Most of the people on RP servers (at least from my experience) did very light RP only. I have seen very very little guilds that required people to speak IC 24/7 and OOC in brackets or something like that. Usually it was just a few things the guilds required the members to do regarding behaviour and it was all very casual. For example my vanilla WoW guild had guild meetings always in the same place (some dwarven bunker in Hillsbrad Foothills) that was "our base". Or you had guilds that were race-specific.

One of the bigger problems however is as Khorin says, there's actually very little character customization (regarding looks) in MMORPGs due to stats being the important part. However some people still farmed gear sets solely for the looks and just switched to those sets when they did RP.
