Some tips and advice for your new friend:

• Turn into your swings (so they connect faster and hit harder).
• Stick with teammates, you're wearing scraps of cloth for armor and a rotting hulk of wood for a shield, you're not going to be able to run
  around and kill enemies by yourself very easily.
• Get some WPF in 1h so your axe doesn't swing so ungodly slow.
• Trying to be an archer, a 2h'er, a shielder, and a 1h is not a very good use of your skills, ask the community for build advice or use a character calculator

Also congrats on your first kill, think I went 200 some deaths before I got my first kill.

Ye, every time I join the server I know almost every player and those few who I don't know are new alts... Damn, I even stopped chasing peasants aka easy kills cause there's no true peasants in this game any more

It's easy to forget how unintuitive Warband is, right up until you watch a new player flailing all over the place trying to land a hit (only to glance when he does).

That was great, so many memories come up. 

I think the game is rougher for newer players than before (but not before the big patch), just because as mentioned several times already there are very few players these days who are legitimately new.  Back when I was on this guy's level there were many people like me, so it was exciting flailing at each other to try to come out on top.  We also had the added benefit of always having Deafening Flood in the duel server, ready and willing to teach the core basics to any of us new players.  Now when I go to duel I sometimes see newer players trying to learn their basics, only to fight against someone who thinks they have to unleash their love, anger, and all their sorrow against every single person they fight against. 

Anyway without Deafening active anymore this is still the best way to teach your friend the basics of the game:
