Weapon reach

Could someone explain to me how weapon reach varies between weapons?

I'm currently using a double sided lance with a thrust (length 130) but I seem to always be getting outreached by longswords (length 103). Maybe my footwork is just bad, but I can't seem to ever outreach two handed thrusts. Can anyone explain this?

The animations of certain swings for 2h and polearm add and take away length. But 2h has superior animations so that is probably why you are being outreached.

Also they might be moving in just after your stab so your arms are still extended but you don't do any damage anymore.

If you take a look at how a 2h and a polearm are being held you see that the 2h weapon is held at the hilt and the polearm somewhat in the middle.
So the 2h stab gets all its length + the arms of the wielder, the polearmer gets... well dunno, pretty much nothing in comparison.
There is a list of bonus and malus to length with the different attack direction, but dont know where.

These guys have explained your problem. As a solution, you can practice footwork and proper timing to outreach a 2h thrust. But you may end up getting screwed by the game half the time anyway. Or you can just stab those bastards when they're busy fighting teammates and not have to worry about it   :P

Take a pike and stay close to your mates. 2handers love pikes, you'll suddenly see a lot of people backpedaling.

I'd suggest checking this thread out:

http://forum.meleegaming.com/beginner%27s-help-and-guides/game-mechanic-megathread!/

Ctrl+F and search "Reach" (but I'll be nice and paste it for you):

Melee reach
Animations for different weapon types have different effects on weapon reach.

    Weapon lengths themselves aren't really comparable between weapon types. Animations add or reduce from the effective length of an attack. So in effect if you for example compare a thrust of a 120 length polearm (Bec de Corbin) and a 120 length twohander (Great Sword) they will NOT effectively reach the same lengths. Due to the way polearm is held polearm is from 15 to 61 units shorter depending on animation. This animation effect on reach is very noticeable especially with one handed weapon stabs. Even a short one handed sword can outrange a twohander or a polearm with a thrust in some cases. It's worth a note that polearms in general have longer options than twohanders to compensate for the shorter reaching animations.

    1h
    Overhead = +0
    Left-to-right = +0
    Right-to-left = +19
    Thrust = +61

    2h
    Overhead = +15
    Left-to-right = +17
    Right-to-left = +13
    Thrust = +80 (This may be slightly wrong with the new stab animation)

    2h Polearms
    Overhead = -15
    Left-to-right = -7
    Right-to-left = -2
    Thrust = +19

    1h Polearms
    Thrust = +50

+80 for 2h stab and +19 for polearm thrust is probably correct or close to it.

If both players time it perfectly a horseman's heavy lance (190/209) will outreach a danish greatsword (124/204) by very little (5 it seems).
However, the danish will hit the head of the horse before the lance hits the infantry player.

Another person updated with his own set of ranges. I believe this more than +61 on 1h thrust any day. 2h polearm thrust is used as a base.

Polearms :
+0   Stab
+15 Overhead
+23 Right
+15 Left
+30 If you stab while mounted or holding a shield

2 handed :
+65 Stab
+45 Overhead
+30 Right
+30 Left

1 handed :
+40 Stab
+30 Overhead
+40 Right
+15 Left
