JAROLD IS THE WINNER! Plain old flies good sirs. 
The story starts off with the a maggot emerging out of the hole of a brown planet, the planet is shit in the garbage, one could say like flies on shit. har har har.
After eating a hearty meal of garbage in the "cafeteria" the maggot falls asleep and turns into a full grown fly.  When he learns to fly an aircraft its actually him learning to "Fly".  The other aircrafts the fly has to fight is different assortments of insects all trying to feed on the garbage he was born into.
Near the end of the piece the fly, I, attack the enemy commander insect and after a crazy fight I kill him and rip off his head,  But what links it all together is that I die right after being alive for 24 hours and some believe that flies "only live a day".  I'm not sure if that's even right but I thought it would complete the story to have the hero complete his mission and die gloriously.

Flies live between a fortnight and a month, roughly. MAYflies live for 24 hours. GAY.

Adding too many "drama", aka irrelevant and false facts, does make it pretty hard to guess what insect you're talking about.
We all add the "plane = flying insect" thing. But leading to false directions with 24h live, and fighting against an ennemy (i mean, seriously, fighting flies ? like dieing and all ?) that they don't even really have as flies (except spiders and birds, but your ennemies are clearly other flying insects).

So, conclusion : thanks for the reading, trying to "humanize" the insect is good, and adds to the fiction, but don't add accurate (24h) nonsense, if you want people to find wich thing you're talking about.
