I dont quite like the 3d though, never did but i had to give it another shot. LOVE the framerate increase, looks beautiful. The movie itself is as expected very good, but i hate that lots of people laugh at stuff that really isnt that funny, oh well..

I liked the 3d..had nothing to compare it to though. It just felt a bit blurry sometimes but was quite unique, I would go see a 3d movie again

strangely people found Bilbo catching the ring on his finger funny (the ring has a will of its own and wanted to get on the finger, it wasn't an accident).

I guess it was intended to be a bit lighthearted, just a shame to have Gollum as mere comic relief

Imo a pretty good movie! It was fun to watch, the story, while not amazing was solid. The effects, acting, cgi, costumes, set, everything like that was amazing.

They did the fucking eagle thing. Again. Jesus Christ, the one little narrative fuck-up that everyone I know has pointed out in the LOTR movies was the eagle thing. Why not just ride the eagles to the volcano and drop the ring in?

Why not ride the eagles to the dragon's lair?

Also, I'm pretty sure the eagles were able to speak in the book. This would work wonders for explaining their existence, and why they're so willing to help Gandalf whenever he calls, like a damn taxi service. They could easily have these eagles use some excuse: eagle power politics, or poor gas mileage, to explain why they refuse to be the fully utilized, story-changing, cav-like OP monstrosities that they could be. Plus, talking eagles? That's just cool.

I watched it in 2D. 3D sucks balls in every movie I've seen so I was not about to let that ruin the experience.

Myself and my 2 teenagers thought it was a really good movie.

On the dwarves, only Kili made you go "that's not a dwarf."

On the story, PJ took some liberties, but only some and it made for a better flow through the story.

Orcs and Goblins should really have been given more of a visual difference. I can see neophytes not getting that they were 2 different factions.

Otherwise, very happy with the film. Plenty for real Tolkien fans, as well as casual movie goers. (And reading some comments in this thread, plenty of people here who have no clue, but plenty of opinion. Please just stop commenting on Tolkien stories and just watch the movie. Because you aren't a Tolkien fan. You just like good films.)

About the Eagles:

The idea of the Eagles transporting the Ring to Mount Doom, or at least part of the way, is not discussed in The Lord of the Rings and Tolkien himself apparently never specifically addressed it, except in an oblique manner. In The Letters of J. R. R. Tolkien, he stated: "The Eagles are a dangerous 'machine'. I have used them sparingly, and that is the absolute limit of their credibility or usefulness. The alighting of a Great Eagle of the Misty Mountains in the Shire is absurd; it also makes the later capture of G. [Gandalf] by Saruman incredible, and spoils the account of his escape." (Letter 210) In the DVD commentary for Peter Jackson's film adaptation of The Return of the King, Jackson and Fran Walsh joke that not using the Eagles to travel directly to Mount Doom was a plot hole, at which point Philippa Boyens angrily points out to them that the Flying Nazgûl would have intercepted them had they attempted this, and it simply became a common joke that it was a plot hole because the Flying Nazgûl were not introduced in the first film, a point to which Jackson and Walsh humbly conceded.

I think you can suspend your disbelief by considering the stealth aspect in LotR..They would have been an obvious target for Sauron to intercept. Plus they might have known about the flying creatures Sauron had (not necessarily the Nazgul) and wanted to avoid them. The only reason they can get so close to Mount Doom is because its only 2 hobbits. Not sure about The Hobbit..it was always just a Children's story to start with so maybe Tolkien wasn't overly concerned with it all making 100% sense. You could say the Eagles only come in times of emergencies when Gandalf calls them, and generally want to stay out of things

I went in with lower expectations because of the early reviews but ended up really enjoyed it.  Just like King Kong though, it felt like a directors cut because of the length but overall was still very good.

I heard something about the eagles being some sort of gods who could save them but not help them on their quest if that makes sense, lulz. So they couldnt fly them to the mount doom but only rescue them when in a pinch.

Read a comment saying something like that so it could be made up.. Googled some and theres nothing saying anything about that so i guess its all bull.

What? Because only flying creatures can take down flying creatures? Arrows didn't exist? The only reason the Eagles could rescue the Hobbits is because The Eye was focused elsewhere or dead. Had they simply tried to fly in, they would have been the entire focus and easily destroyed!
In the Hobbit? They came to save Gandalf and they hate Orcs and Wargs. But giving a taxi ride? Oh hell no. Walk bitches. We aren't Passenger Pigeons.

Watched it in 2d, and the special effects (especially the eagles) looked like they were plastic. Seemed like everything possible were made with computers, less make-up, real costumes... Maybe it would have looked better in 3d, now it just sucked. Lotr movies looked much better. Also I didnt like that it was so comical (Gollum, Radagast's rabbits, joking goblins and trolls). In overall it was entertaining, butthose few things disturbed me all the time.

Watched the movie today in 3D. I was thrown out after 30 minutes of watching because of all the buckets I came over how awesome it was.

Yeah, Tolkien fucked it all up. Too late to change your mind after you've gone to print pal! You don't call someone The Goblin King, and then later try to say he is simply an Orc that calls himself a Goblin instead that isn't actually a King, but some kind of chieftain.
