Overclocking a Radeon HD 6870 card (make Sapphire)

Hey guys, just upgraded and Id like to overclock it, can anyone help me?


I already have MSI afterburner installed, just need a good core clock rate

Why would you like to OC it? Its preety decent and you shouldnt have problems running any games atm at maximum, all i've so far from OCing GPUs is graphic glitches and errors..

Same here;

OC-ing a GPU only caused lags, lower FPS, glitches, BSOD, and a slower reacting computer most of the time.

Consider overclocking your CPU instead.
That really works.

Also, Warband relies more on RAM and CPU performance imo, it's not heavily VGA-based.

My card keeps overheating now... its brand new, my old one was a 4800! I mean it works at 75 C, is that bad for a card?

More reason not to overclock and instead get better cooling.

But no, 75 Celsius is OK as long as your computer isn't turning off form overheating or getting damaged.
Speaking of hot graphics cards, i was just talking about them with my friend on teamspeak. His were running at 110 celsius just an hour ago and his computer was practically a sauna due to the heat they were producing. That is with blowing heat out of his bedroom window, door to house open and blowing into the room; lol

moral of the story is: You're fine.

Overclock a 6870? Lol what for..

Anyway OC-ing pretty much anything is little result (about 5-10% average improvement) for a LOT of damage (shorter life time, chance to fry it).

I had some issues with heat myself too, with old case idle process temp was 40-50c (E8400 at 3.8) and graphics 40-60c (ati 4890), then i bought HAF 932 and the idle temps went down to 25c and 30-40c, so yeah quite a difference.

OCing a GPU isn't worth the risk IMO, the outcome will not give you much more power and you potentially risk damaging your card in the long run. Also as everyone has pointed out, your card will just run hotter, not good for the upcoming Summer months, could knock some life off of your card, well unless you've got some decent water cooling.

If you still are really intent on OCing your GPU, make sure you read through countless top notch forums and posts from hundreds of people who have done it with that card, you have to be 100% accurate with what you're doing and what your aims are before you do something like this. I really don't see the point in your GPU being overclocked though, it's a good card already.

Ya you guys are right, no reason to overclock it, i believe my gpu gets as hot as 75 C I think when I play shogun 2, hopefully it caps out at that

On another note I payed 30 dollars for a 2 year warranty on this card, it covers everything except physical damage (i.e me hitting it with a hammer) - so lets just say a year and 3/4 from now Im going to have an "accident" overclocking it.

Lol, make sure to read all of the warranty small print before you do, I suspect overclocking voids the warranty too. If you really wanted to have an 'accident' you could just purposely burn it out by removing the GPU fan and wrap it with something, lol.

na na, the guy specifically told me that everythign is covered except physical dmage- he said if i mess it up overclocking it is all good

You would have to set a REALLY high clock speed to blow your Video Card, with modern technology the system will shut down before any damage could happen to your system. At least that's what I've experienced on my friend's PC back then.
