Unless they show videos of a different game, I doubt that.

Well I'd sure like to hope not, wouldn't be the best marketing campaign, would it?

'Like dueling with crowbars in halflife' is the quote I am referring to, this is an initial reaction from a video, not from hands on gameplay.

Ah ok, that's just chadz exaggerating. :P

You call this stiff? That coming from a cRPG player, a game where you can't even sprint or jump.

I have been Alpha and now beta testing Chivalry MW with the dev team since 2010 and I personally disagree with this; if you pick it up when its released I think your opinion on the movement and vibe will change :)
How does melee combat feels compare to warband? Does it have some depth or not?

It certainly does have depth to it, can only really talk about what has been publicly announced. It has free form directional blocking for a start, meaning to perform a successful block you have to aim accurately with the cursor meeting the enemies attack. The game mechanics do very well at making it quick to understand while having the depth in taking time to master :)

Look through the official site/forums for more info's  8-)

The crowbar thing was ofc an exaggeration, although that was the first thing that came to my mind when watching that kickstarter video.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to badmouth the game. Every game set in the semi-realistic medieval department is great, because it draws more people into the genre, and we all profit from that in terms of larger interest for the genre.

The problem is just that the game has so many drawbacks and heavy limitations that (for me!) it's not ok when the melee combat is just close to warbands level of depth - it would have to be mindblowing to really set a new level. They have to overcome serious limitations after all (32 players per server, no horses, no groundbreaking gameplay). And I just don't see that.

So many medieval games coming up, but in the end they all tell me the same thing: if you want something done properly, do it yourself

How does it feel to be a fanboy of a game that isn't even near release version, I bet it fucking rocks man, every thing we see you can counter "no it isn't actually like that in-game" and every thing that is missing or we dislike you can go "it's going to be different at release, it's still alpha!!!"
As an Alpha/Beta tester of the game I know what I'm talking about unlike you I can compare both games and draw my conclusions.

The problem is just that the game has so many drawbacks and heavy limitations that (for me!) it's not ok when the melee combat is just close to warbands level of depth - it would have to be mindblowing to really set a new level. Ofcourse this game isn't perfect (there is no perfect game) but I and many other people (who are willing to open their eyes) think that this is currently the best melee game out there.
-32 players is not THAT much of a limitation: more players doesn't necessarily mean a better melee combat experience and ofcourse the initial limit can be exceeded like in many other games.
- Horses are not needed for decent melee game but the devs of Chivalry have shown some interest in mounted combat as possible DLC.
- If you compare the fighting system you'll see that no other melee game has done it this properly. But before you can fully appreciate the combat system you have to experience it( for the people who only see what they want to see), so your whole view on the game might change if you give it a go :)

-32 players is not THAT much of a limitation

It's pretty much a deal breaker for anyone who plays Warband for big battles. It can compete with War of the Roses, or small Native servers, else it's just a different kind of game.

Didn't warband only originally have quite small servers? It was only later they jacked up the numbers. And only after that that the massive servers came along.

32 is small. But games that tend to have small servers like that tend to have the numbers increased at some point to at least 64. And after that the community tends to break things to make the numbers go higher. So same thing is possible in either this or WotR.

The graphics are far better than m&b for sure but the combat looks weird. They seem to do a parry in one direction each time. Its just going off that vid posted in this thread but melee looks so simplistic compared to m&b.

I do like the idea of burning a village down vs capturing a flag though. Much more badass and fun.

some impressions from Reapy, who is playing beta and seems enjoy it.
No directional blocking apparently.

Anybody from here playing beta?

from their kickstarter page

Quote
Are there horses or other mountable animals ingame?
No, we have decided to focus our attention on delivering the highest quality foot-based melee combat because we believe that no commercial product has done this successfully yet. The game also has a strong focus on siege warfare and horses would not fit in the maps as designed.

heretics, burn them
