Yes, there were bombings and such prior to but it is debatable whether or not Mandela sanctioned it (doubtful IMHO). The point is that the actual overthrow went peacefully without bloodshed. There were obviously plenty of fatalities from civil unrest and killings committed by mercenary forces, though those fatalities in themselves were minor when set against the total number populace number.
Regarding Iran, they might (more than likely) have given Hezbollah money but no matter what the US set Iran on the path it is today due to (on behalf of the British), in 1953, overthrowing Mossadegh the elected president of Iran at the time, where-as they then installed the ruthless dictator 'The Shah'. Most people think the whole issue with Iran began in 1979 with the hostage crisis, but that is not true. It started in 1953...
