As far as I can 'read up' people have a bunch of info on their XBL/PSN profiles, in general most online are nabs that don't set their stuff to 'private' etc -- even a tidbit can lead you to a lot more.
Take the guy who's nickname he mentions, koronthagunman, a small search and you can find his name and birth year, with that you can find some of his old posts where he mentions he lives in Tupelo etc.
He most likely goes through the list of players online until he spots a good target, then proceeds from there.
You'd be surprised how little privacy you have
unless you're an extremely paranoid person who've on purpose tried to hide who your real self online there's always a way to find out who someone is, at the very least an IP can tell you which town a person lives in, and even if it goes to a central far away there's multiple other methods to determine where exactly a person is located.
