After a few attempts at different styles, I am settled on using  a 1 hander and a shield. It's the only way I feel like I'm viable at my current shitty level of skill. I would also like to use throwing weapons to mix it up. Can I spare enough points to make it effective, without gimping my 1 handed attacks? I don't wanna be one shotting people or anything, but I'd like it to make people go "aaargh" and bleed a little

What would be a good build to shoot for?

I read something about armor and multiplying the actual weight value when you add it up, to arrive at a sum you don't want to go over, or it reduces your throwing efficacy. I didn't really understand it.

glove weight is x8, helm is x6.  wear medium body armor (no more than 15lb), leather gloves in a 30-45 armor helm and you'll do ok.

So I can't keep wearing my mail gauntlets?

I have roman helmet 1.8, heraldic mail 11.1, mail chausses 1.7 and those gauntlets .5. I am using a plain board shield with a weight of 6 if that matters.

As a new player I would highly recommend you do not try to make these hybrid builds.

I tried to use PD on my first generation because I was a clueless noob and it was a mistake.  I was awful with the bow, and I was not as strong in melee as I could have been as a result.

Not to mention, you will spend more money by having the throwing weapons on your person.

Just go for a straight up 1H/shield character, with balanced stats, so you will have a better time learning the basics.

Morph gave me a shit ton of money and I'm richer than Jesus himself...not worried about the bit of upkeep on my 2 throwing weapons.

i'm too lazy to do the math and but you'll be losing a fair amount of WPF for the extra weight, and for what....2 or 3 more armor?

Yeah unless you've got loomed gloves, don't fret.  Kudos for trying a hybrid build.  You're only kind of gimping yourself, but with a 21/15 build you'll do fine.  Instead of the huscarl shield as suggested use maybe a heavy round, or something 1 slot that you like the style of, only cuz its 1 slot, but you're probably already doing so.

War darts, axes, or javelins are probably your best bet with two stacks to utilize.  Darts have a high accuracy and ammo count and actually still do damage, so are probably your best bet to make people go "argh" and bleed a little.  Axes and javs will hit harder if you only plan on getting a few tosses in before entering the fray, haha

As a noob myself that  went with a shield build when I first started playing I would recommend against it. You'll want to learn how to be at least decent at blocking because when your shield breaks you're just fodder at that point.
