It's a bit of a shame if you want to change your gameplay, but it is also understandable (that way you don't focus on heirlooming the most OP weapon, if such a thing exists).
And i'ts nice if you think of retirement like this:
-Son, I'm old and I can't battle anymore. It is time for you to follow my footsteps.
-But father, I don't think I'd be a great swordsman like you...
-Nonsense! Take my beloved Sword of War, and take care of her. Your grandfather gave it to me, and it has served me well. They don't know how to make swords like this no more.
-I will wield her, and make sure I honour it with my skills, father!
