You seem to have the idea that caravans are sacresanct and untouchable. If an army is carrying crates, they could be weapons just as much as trade goods. I wouldnt even send a caravan anywhere near my enemies (or suspected enemies) for fear of it being attacked.
I havent committed an awful deed by attacking that caravan - show me a faction that wouldnt attack an enemy caravan if it was within easy reach?
You had baldrider (i think?) set up an ambush between buillin and the castle which is just as bad, if not worse.
