I'd like to try doing some stuff like this just in the event of a zombie apocalypse just as a skill set to have in case. I'm sure there'd be no real shortage of tools but when stuff breaks down it's something that would be good to know.
try working on truck leaf springs, and NEVER EVER galvanized steel you forge that you will die in days
you can use charcoil, the lump stuff. but you will need alot of it. but a propain forge is were its at, and if you cant find a anvil then useing a cut railroad track works too
as for tools you can get that at a tracker supply store

but finding a local school to take a class or two will be the best bet to learning how
will say again be very very careful about what you forge there is more then a few blacksmiths today that have died from metal fume fever by not understanding what iron there heating
