What do Bodkin arrows do?

I looked at the stats and I dont see a reason to buy them. You only get 15 of them per life and it says they do 0 Pierce damage?
Surely if they did any damage what so ever they would rather put that? so really, why so damn expensive?

If you look at the stats of a bow, you can see, that it makes CUT damage.
If you choose the bodkins, the damage switches from CUT to PIERCE. And that is an huge difference.

Zero BONUS damage from the arrow. It still does the bow's damage, but converts all the damage to piercing. It is definitely the superior arrow, but also costs thereafter, since arrows often need to be repaired.

You better have a lot of money for such a setup. Both weapons are pretty expensive, as are bodkin arrows. I'd recommend going with barbed arrows (weights a bit less than normal arrows, and do enough bonus damage to compensate for reduced amount), and overall light armour.

Lets face it, we all were new to this mod once. And back then we though that weeaboo armors were the coolest thing this mod had

And about pierce. Piercing damage type allows you to ignore much larger part of the enemies armor than cut or blunt.

Don't go archer.

If you spend the majority of rounds shooting stuff then you're never going to get good, besides I think you'll get bored pretty fast from the bland archer mechanics (especially in comparison to the unique and awesome melee of M@B)

Go for a balanced 21-18 melee build or something instead, with a non-ridiculous weapon (the Nodachi works fine, even though you miss out on the stab) and learn the ropes.

This is from personal experience btw. I started out pretty late but thanks to me going full melee from the start I was able to catch up to the older players pretty fast.

As another samurai I generally mix it up a fair bit. Sometimes it's light armour, yumi, and katana or dadao, other times it's heavy armour and nodachi. I find both styles fun, and it's nice to be able to switch around depending on mood and needs.

If enemy side is cav-heavy I might for example go for the bow instead, to dehorse a few, while sometimes it's nice to just slug it out in melee with the nodachi and a it-takes-many-arrows-to-kill-me suit of armour.

1.7mil more to my first retirement, and for that I'm probably going for polearms and archery instead, or even 100% polearms, just to go with the long hafted blade (which is more 'samurai' than running around with a sword is, even though I like the nodachi).

@Deutschritter: Longbow is useless because it uses two slots. Samurai builds can only afford 1-slot bows due to 2-slot melee weapons (nodachi, long hafted blade, spears, katana), and the yumi is the only samurai-bow there is anyway.
