I suppose it wouldn't be able to. It could be a throwing weapon with auto-retrieve of ammo (1) and it would not have a melee mode. It would need to have extreme drop-off (short range).

To make it worth using, it should have two bonuses, such as Knockdown / Shield Bonus or Crushthrough / Knockdown.
