Everyone lurks, don't deny it.  Yup, I'm a fan of some of the more hillarious shenanigans (still don't understand why this is such a hard concept for you to grasp).  No, not really any emulation going on.  I've always pretty much been an asshole.  Ya'll weren't even established back in the days of dragonrealms (text based MUD bliss) and T.E.N. with our lord and savior Duke.  It's kind of hard not to be a fucking prick when you grow up as the internet grows up.   

Coming from a goon though (and seeing what you guys post and act like) I'll take the behave like one comment as some strange self-loathing compliment, though I'm sure that's not how you think you intended it.  I do love how fixated you guys are with the fedora though, it's like fucking troll bait gold.  Just latch right onto it like it's the newest shiny in a room full of women.  Love it.

HELL NO!  East coast players get great ping to chicago, i see many with under 50 ping.  Us poor west coasters hover around 100 ping.  People from Germany get only slightly worse ping on na servers than West Coast Americans! 

I'm sure goons would be fine running a server.  If they weren't then no one would play there.  Lady Gaga is a goon admin on the ATS servers and i don't recall any abuse of power from Gaga.

I play from NJ and connect to the NA servers with a ping of ~40. I think we're doing fine on this coast.

 I am currently in school for a computer networking degree, and thought it might be fun as a way to learn linux, and server hosting to try and build a linux server in my spare room to host a west coast crpg server. I might be able to only host a 50 player server, but I still am game to try for the lol's. Thoughts? Is even worth the effort?

2Mbit upstream? Lol. I'd say for 50 players you'd want 15Mbit in the least for decent pings.

 ...which is why I am asking, according the dedicated server thread, it is doable, I am building the box anyways to learn linux I thought I might as well put it to use somehow

Link to said thread. 2Mbit for a dedicated server is laughable, unless M&B's/cRPG's netcode is very, very light. Moreso that you'd even think of running on a residential connection.

Your downstream (which matters for almost nothing when running a dedicated server) is 20Mb/sec

20Mb/sec ~= 2.5MB/sec

Your upstream is almost 2Mb/sec, which matters the most when running a dedicated server.

2Mb/sec ~= 0.25MB/sec ~= 256KB/sec

Based on that thread players require anywhere from 5-10KB/sec, so you'd probably max out at/around 25 players. You'd saturate your upstream horribly and the server would lag to hell. You'd want this on a 10Mbit dedicated upstream in the least for 50+ players. So I'd say you'd want to have maybe 16 players max to maintain decent speeds.
