Soul Coughing had a truly unique sound. 90s "alt rock" that draws as much from jazz as it does from rock. Love the walking bass lines that go all over the place while still keeping the beat. Great distorted organ/synth stabs add a lot to the unique sound as well. The singer was dealing with a pretty serious heroin habit, and many of his lyrics have something to do with craving/using/withdrawal from the
good stuff. Speaking of good stuff here's some tracks:
Get on to the bus
That's gonna take you back to Beelzebub
Get on to the bus
That's gonna make you stop going rub a dub
I drink the drink
And I'm wall to wall
Quadrilateral I was
Now I'm warped like a smile
Stop hitching with the monster man
It was a bad plan but I had to get to town
Unbidden but the way I found it was a hand came down
And pow, I got illuminated
Born to be a God among salesmen
Working the skinny tie
Slugging down fruit juice
Extra tall extra wide
Moving door to door, to door
Stoned motel room
Nice cool on the bathroom floor
Spoon to the lighter, to the lighter, to the gun
Devil lapsed out in a pool of sun
